Specifically, currently, white-leg shrimp of 30 pieces/kg cost 150,000 - 160,000 VND/kg, shrimp of 20 pieces/kg cost from 190,000 - 200,000 VND/kg, 30,000 - 40,000 VND/kg higher than the same period last year.
Having just harvested 2 hectares of white-leg shrimp with a yield of 5 tons at a price of 150,000 VND/kg, Mr. Nguyen Van Duc in Ba Tri commune said that after deducting expenses, he earned more than 400 million VND. According to Mr. Duc, although shrimp farming on tarpaulin ponds has low yield, with the current high price, farmers still make a profit. Previously, Mr. Duc raised shrimp in the traditional way on earthen ponds, shrimp often did not reach large size, were susceptible to disease, so had to be harvested early. Thanks to the application of improved intensive farming, farming on tarpaulin ponds, and sparse farming, shrimp have large sizes and can be sold at higher prices.
Mr. Duc shared that currently, high-tech shrimp farming (multi-stage shrimp farming) is very effective, but it requires a large investment capital, so it is difficult for farmers to apply. With the current high and stable shrimp price, in the near future, Mr. Duc will have more capital to switch to high-tech shrimp farming to achieve better efficiency.
Mr. Le Van Sam's family in Thanh Hai commune has been raising shrimp using high technology for over 10 years with very positive results. Currently, the family's 50 hectares of shrimp farming area have all been converted to high-tech shrimp farming, no longer farming in the traditional way. Currently, every month, Mr. Sam harvests shrimp with output and size that meet export quality.
According to Mr. Sam, investing in high-tech shrimp farming brings great efficiency but the initial investment capital is large so people are still hesitant. As for him, he does not invest massively, but invests in parts and areas. Profits from previous farming crops will be the capital to continue investing in the next crops. Many technologies are thoroughly applied by him in shrimp farming such as: net houses, oxygen generators, pond bottom covers, automatic feeding, chlorine aerators... With the current high shrimp prices, Mr. Sam has a profit of 600 - 700 million/ha/year.
Shrimp buyers in Vinh Long province said that the current high shrimp prices are due to the strong increase in domestic consumption, factories focusing on production to meet orders at the end of the year. In addition, this is the "off-season" time, with heavy rains causing a decrease in the output of traditionally farmed shrimp, with large-sized shrimp meeting export standards.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long Nguyen Van Buoi informed that the whole province currently has a brackish water shrimp area in coastal communes of more than 69,000 hectares; of which, the area of intensive shrimp farming, applying high technology is increasingly expanded by farmers with about 6,000 hectares. The current high shrimp price is an advantage for people to switch to high-tech shrimp farming. Converting production models, applying modern science and technology is no longer an option but has become an effective direction for farmers to apply, in order to improve productivity, product quality and increase the competitiveness of local agricultural products.
In the coming time, the local agricultural sector will focus on technical support and infrastructure investment to sustainably develop brackish water shrimp farming in coastal communes. Thereby, creating a "launching pad" to help Vinh Long agriculture transform in a modern direction, from small-scale production to a linked model, applying synchronous science and technology.
At the same time, the province encourages the development of value chains between farmers, cooperatives and enterprises, creating conditions for production to be linked with stable processing and consumption; enhancing training and technology transfer so that people can access and adapt to high-tech agricultural production processes effectively.
