At the Community House of Area 2, An Xuan on the afternoon of October 11, the atmosphere of the scrap exchange session was bustling. Dozens of farmer members brought sacks filled with beer cans, plastic bottles, scrap paper, scrap iron and steel... to exchange for organic fertilizer, vegetable seeds or bonsai plants.

Each type of scrap has a specific conversion rate: beer cans 350 VND/piece, iron and steel 6,000 VND/kg, paper and plastic 2,000 VND/kg. After conversion, members of the An Khe Ward Farmers' Association will receive an additional 50% of the value of the money to buy fertilizer or seeds, encouraging people to actively participate.

These seemingly small gifts have great significance. Each bag of fertilizer and seed not only helps members develop urban agriculture models in small spaces, but also reminds them of their responsibility to keep the living environment green, clean and beautiful.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Cong, a member of Thuan An 1 Association, was one of the first people to exchange trash. He brought nearly 20kg of waste paper to exchange, which was worth 40,000 VND. With an additional 20,000 VND in support from the Ward Farmers' Association, Mr. Cong received two bags of fertilizer and two packages of vegetable seeds.

“The program helps us realize the value of waste classification and recycling. I will encourage people in the neighborhood to participate to both grow more trees and protect the environment,” Mr. Cong shared.

Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Quan Quan brought 15kg of paper, 2kg of plastic and more than 1.5kg of beer cans. This amount of scrap was converted to 75,000 VND, plus 30,000 VND in support money from the association to exchange for fertilizer and seeds.

Mr. Quan said: “I find the model very practical, providing an additional source of fertilizer to grow clean vegetables at home and contributing to reducing the amount of waste released into the environment. I hope the program will be held regularly so that people have more motivation to participate.”

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai Ly, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of An Khe Ward, the whole ward currently has 62 farmers' associations. After implementing the pilot in An Xuan area, the model will be replicated in other areas such as Hoa An, Hoa Phat , periodically once a month.

“The Ward Farmers' Association sets a goal that from 2026 onwards, 100% of branches will maintain the collection and exchange of recycled waste, aiming for 100% of waste to be collected and treated away from residential areas.

Thereby, encouraging members to develop small urban agricultural models, increase clean vegetables for family meals and reduce environmental pollution," said Ms. Ly.

The model of "Exchanging recycled waste for fertilizer and seeds" in An Khe ward is a practical direction for the movement "Farmers join hands to protect the environment" to go into depth, becoming a cultural beauty in urban life.
