• More than 3,000 students received free school eye exams

Understanding these disadvantages, the Provincial Eye - Dermatology Hospital coordinated with the U Minh Regional Medical Center and U Minh Commune to organize a school eye care program at Nguyen Trung Truc Secondary School. This is not just a simple medical activity, but a journey of love and responsibility, sent from the hearts of doctors to children in rural areas. In just one day, nearly 500 students were screened for vision, refractive errors were detected early and glasses were given free.

Local authorities joined in the eye examination for students.

Behind the numbers are touching stories. Like Do Ngoc Kim Ngan, an 8th grader, who is shy and often affected in her studies because she cannot see the letters on the board clearly. Her family is poor and she has never had an eye exam. When she tried on her first pair of glasses, her face lit up, her sparkling eyes looked around the class and she exclaimed in amazement: "I see it, I can see clearly even the friend sitting at the back of the class!" - a simple joy that contained the whole world that had just opened up before her eyes, clear, vivid and full of color.

Eye screening for students.

Or the case of Nguyen Bao Xuyen, a student with excellent grades for many years in a row in grade 6, but for more than a year now his academic performance has been somewhat affected because he has a refractive error, making everything blurry. His mother, Hoa, emotionally shared: "I did not have the conditions to take my child to the doctor, so I just found out he has an eye disease. Thank you to the program, thank you to the doctors for bringing light to my child."

The team of doctors and nurses from the Provincial Eye and Dermatology Hospital examined the children's eyes using modern equipment.

Unlike regular medical examinations, the free eye examination program for rural children is truly a “festival” of smiles, love and sharing. The doctors and nurses not only examine the children with care but also instruct the children on how to protect their eyesight, a reasonable diet and daily eye care habits. The small glasses today open up a new and brighter world for the children.

Despite the heavy rain and difficult roads, the medical team, doctors and technicians of the Provincial Eye - Dermatology Hospital brought with them the spirit of volunteering, ready to go to the facility. Each person has a job, each hand is a part of the effort, with the hope that no child's eyes will be forgotten, especially those in remote areas where eye care conditions are difficult.

Students excitedly participated in games at the eye examination.

Speaking at the program, Doctor CKII Ngo Thanh Tan, Deputy Director of the Provincial Eye - Dermatology Hospital, shared: “We are very moved to witness each innocent pair of eyes seeing clear light, with joy and amazement. This is not a one-time activity, but the beginning of a long journey. In the coming time, the hospital will continue to coordinate with localities to organize more free eye examinations in other remote communes, so that the joy does not stop in U Minh, but continues to spread to disadvantaged places.”
