Hanoi: Heavy rain, many schools switch to online learning

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngan Binh, Principal of Kim Giang Primary School ( Hanoi ), said that yesterday the weather was quite good so the school announced that students would return to in-person learning from October 7. However, today, it rained heavily from night until 6 am without stopping, there was a risk of flooding so the school decided to send a notice to parents to switch to online learning combined with homework delivery like yesterday.

“The school is following the direction of the Department of Education and Training to closely monitor weather developments to proactively decide whether to teach in person or online to ensure the safety of students and teachers,” said Ms. Binh.

Nguyen Sieu Primary School yesterday afternoon announced that students would return to school in person on October 7, however, at 6:15 this morning, there was also an announcement to adjust the teaching plan. Accordingly, students in grades 4-5 will study online, students in grades 1-3 will study on their own according to the teacher's instructions. Specifically, teachers will send homework sheets via the system for students to complete.

Similarly, Ly Thai To Primary School also announced that all students will be off school on Tuesday (October 7). Today's learning plan is for students in grades 2-5 to study online via Zoom software; first graders will do exercises assigned by teachers.

At 5:30 a.m., the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences (VNU-Hanoi) announced that heavy rain had flooded the C3 courtyard. To ensure the safety of teachers and students, the school decided to continue online learning.

“All teachers and students will not come to school this morning. The school will announce the afternoon classes as soon as possible,” the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences (VNU-Hanoi) informed parents and students on the morning of October 7.

Ms. Tran Thi Huong, Principal of Van Bao Primary School (Hanoi) also said that based on the fact that the weather was heavy and prolonged with thunder and lightning this morning, the school had announced that all students would be off from in-person classes and would switch to online learning. This is the second day the school has offered online learning to cope with storm No. 11 and ensure the safety of students.

In addition, a series of schools such as Dong Da Secondary School, Chuong Duong Secondary School, Cau Giay Secondary School, Hoang Dieu Primary School... and many other schools have also announced that students will not attend in-person classes on October 7.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Hong, Principal of Chuong Duong Secondary School, said: The school is located next to the Red River, so every time there is a long period of heavy rain, teachers and students worry about the river rising and flooding. With heavy rain like this morning, the school has switched to online learning and will continue to monitor the situation for further announcements.

Yesterday afternoon (October 6), the Hanoi Department of Education and Training sent a notice to schools at all levels stating that storm No. 11 has weakened into a low pressure area, but the circulation after the storm continues to cause moderate rain, heavy rain, and in some places very heavy rain and thunderstorms in Hanoi from the afternoon of October 6 to the afternoon of October 7 (rainfall of 40-70mm, in some places over 100mm). During the storm, there may be tornadoes, lightning, strong gusts of wind, causing localized flooding, fallen trees, traffic jams and unsafe travel.

To ensure absolute safety for students, teachers and school facilities, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training recommends that school principals and heads of units base on actual weather developments in the area, conditions of facilities and traffic safety to proactively decide on the form of direct and online teaching or adjust the appropriate timetable; ensuring absolute safety for students and staff, teachers and employees.
