About 2,000 protesters, including 300 dressed in black, turned out in the Maurienne Valley to protest against the construction of a rail line that would include a tunnel between the French city of Lyon and the Italian city of Turin.

They threw rocks at riot police, before being responded with tear gas, and one protester was injured, local governor Francois Ravier said at a press conference. Meanwhile, the Les Soulevements de la Terre association said 50 protesters were injured, including six who were hospitalized.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin put the number of police injuries at 12. Officials said border checks had uncovered 400 objects, such as knives and hammers, while 96 individuals identified by security services as coming from Italy were deported back.
