Senior members of the Intergenerational Self-Help Club of Dan Dien commune visit the garden and learn about farming and production experience.

The "green seasons" of bumper crops

In the fresh air, we visited the gardens of the members of the Intergenerational Self-Help Club of Dan Dien commune. All over the gardens were full of pomelos, heavy clusters of longans, ripe persimmons, oranges and tangerines waiting to be ripe.

At the garden of Mr. Tran Tang - Club Chairman, we learned about another type of ridged squash. This is a rustic plant, easy to grow but has high economic and medicinal value. According to Mr. Tang, ridged squash can be sold at a price one and a half times higher, even twice as high (prices range from 20,000 - 25,000 VND/kg) compared to regular sweet squash. In addition to selling fruit, the squash vines and leaves are also used to make drinks that cool the liver and reduce heat, which are popular with consumers. Boldly switching to growing new types of plants not only increases income but is also suitable for local soil conditions.

As for Mr. Ho Van Vung - Head of Pho Lai village, an active member of the Club, he shared that with 1.5 hectares of rice fields, growing cassava, vegetables and raising pigs, chickens and ducks, he earns about 100 million VND each year. Thanks to the encouragement, sharing and learning from the experiences of the Club members, he boldly increased production, enthusiastically inspiring the community with the message of "old age but not old strength".

The highlight of the activities of the Dan Dien Commune Club is the connection and mutual learning. With the advantage of knowledge and practical experience from growing and raising local products, each member has different advantages and is willing to share their "capital" from how to choose seeds, choose plants or care techniques, prevent pests, fertilize and even access the market. That sharing not only helps the economy grow but also brings great spiritual values to the members.

"Support" for the elderly

To date, 58 intergenerational self-help clubs have been established, with about 70% being the elderly, women, and people in difficult circumstances. The capital to increase income of the clubs in the city has been socialized with over 1.7 billion VND.

The clubs have implemented 8 practical activities: increasing income, health care, home care, community support, protecting rights, raising awareness, taking care of spiritual life, performing arts - exchanging and mobilizing resources. Up to now, the City Elderly Association's Representative Board has organized 70 training courses for clubs in residential areas, communes and wards with nearly 5,000 participants. The clubs also mobilize social resources to build resources and funds for members to borrow capital to develop the economy and increase income.

From this source of capital, members in difficult circumstances are supported to borrow capital to do business, escape poverty, improve their lives and support the community. In addition, through the volunteer network, the Clubs regularly visit and support lonely elderly people and sick people, and coordinate with local health care so that the elderly are always given priority in examination work and organized periodic health consultations.

In addition, the association with table tennis, chess, Chinese chess, and health clubs... helps the elderly find joy and live a healthy and connected life with the community. The club management board regularly develops specific annual activity plans and establishes specialized groups and teams suitable to the abilities and strengths of each member.

Mr. Ho Viet Le - Head of the City Elderly Association's representative board affirmed: "The Intergenerational Self-Help Club is a humane model with diverse activities, helping the elderly increase their income, take care of their health and promote their role in the family and society. This is a solid 'support' for the elderly, contributing to building new rural areas, civilized urban areas, and preserving cultural lifestyles."
