The effectiveness of Russia's thousand-cut strategy in Dnipropetrovsk

Due to the concentration of forces on the main fronts, the defense area in Dnipropetrovsk was exposed, allowing Russia's Vostok Group to take advantage of the attack.

The most difficult situation for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) today, in addition to hot spots such as Sumy, Kupyansk or Pokrovsk... is now at the junction of three regions between the provinces of Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk.
2.jpg
According to Kiev military experts, citing “a lot of information” in the AFU General Staff, the target of “special attention” of the Russian army (RFAF), in the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, bordering southern Donetsk, is the town of Pokrovskoye, with a pre-war population of nearly 10,000 people and an area of 14 km² (larger than Chasov Yar).
3.jpg
Pokrovskoye is the supply leg of the AFU groups defending Gulyai-Polye (Zaporozhye Oblast) and Novopavlovsk (westernmost Dnipropetrovsk Oblast). In addition, a breakthrough of the RFAF Eastern Group of Forces (Vostok Group) along the Berezove-Novoivanivka-Ol'hivs'ke line is threatening this AFU defense line, which Kiev has been building for more than three years.
4.jpg
The Vostok Group is advancing very well on this front, causing huge losses to the enemy. According to the report of the Russian Ministry of Defense (as of September 30), about 340 Ukrainian soldiers were killed here a day, compared to the average daily loss of 250-270 people.
5.jpg
The AFU General Staff is currently sending reinforcements to the region, trying to stop the RFAF advance. But many of the AFU’s reserve mobile brigades are “locked up” at key fronts. This has led to Ukrainian MP Bezugla to strongly criticize the government and the AFU General Staff for the failure in Dnipropetrovsk.

According to the Russian military channel Voin DV, in the area under the responsibility of the 29th Army of the Vostok Group, Russian assault units continued to penetrate deep into the AFU defense system, destroying the remnants cut off from the main force in the forest belt southwest of Berezove, continuing to overrun Verbove.
7.jpg
The Primorye Brigade of the 5th Army of the Vostok Group is also making territorial gains. They are pushing the Ukrainians out of the forest belt west of Novoivanivka and Ol'hivs'ke.
8.jpg
In the face of the rapidly deteriorating situation on the border between Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regions, according to information from the Ukrainian Deep State channel, the Office of the President of Ukraine is trying to create a unified "strike fire brigade" commanded by Manko and Vlasovite Korotky, nicknamed Malyuta, directly subordinate to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
9.jpg
The “Strike Fire Brigade” consisted of the 3rd, 5th and 92nd Independent Strike Brigades, which merged into one “Strike Super Brigade”, and the first task of this “Super Brigade” was to reinforce the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporozhye fronts; in particular, to defend the town of Pokrovskoye.
10.jpg
According to Ukrainian military analysts, the AFU's move to send in reserve troops here is too late: "The RFAF is advancing here with better indicators than in other areas (this applies to both the speed of their advance and the scale of their advance). And so far, the AFU has not been able to stabilize the situation here for a number of reasons."
11.jpg
Ukrainian blogger Konstantin Mashovets argues that the RFAF has superior resources, especially in terms of infantry numbers. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) says that everything is against the AFU, with one AFU battalion facing up to three or four (and in certain areas, up to five or six) RFAF assault battalions.
12.jpg
Despite regular reinforcements, the strength of Ukraine's frontline units has recently dropped to 30-40 percent of their assigned strength, according to blogger Mashovets. In such conditions, it is obviously difficult to maintain a continuous line of defense.
13.jpg
In such a situation, AFU commanders at the front were forced to organize into isolated strongholds and defensive positions. Between these positions, significant gaps often appeared, which in many areas the Ukrainian forces could only control with artillery fire or FPV UAVs.
14.jpg
Russian intelligence had a firm grasp of the AFU's defensive positions, and ground reconnaissance and aerial surveillance helped Russian intelligence identify these "holes" for the Vostok Group's shock troops to exploit. They then carried out secret, surprise tactics and quickly approached the flanks of the AFU's defensive positions, cutting off communication with their own forces.
12-6352.jpg
This was followed by RFAF firepower that suppressed and mopped up the AFU defenses, causing heavy damage. In fact, both the Russians and the Ukrainians employed “flexible defense” tactics, abandoning their positions during major attacks and quickly returning as soon as the firepower bombardment ceased.
16.jpg
The RFAF infantry and small assault groups that had penetrated would then consolidate their positions at those "infiltration" areas and hold there, while concentrating for the next attack.
17.jpg
"It is extremely difficult to counter such tactics. Objectively speaking, there is only one way to stop the enemy's advance (i.e., the Vostok Group), which is to detect and destroy them immediately, either as they penetrate or before they penetrate.
18.jpg
Because of the lack of infantry, the Ukrainian army is almost unable to continue pursuing them in the areas around the stronghold, while having to hold forward positions and strong points," Mashovets asserted. (photo source Military Review, Ukrinform, TASS).
