In addition to the suspension, coach Jurgen Klopp had to pay a fine of nearly 100,000 USD for his comments aimed at referee Paul Tierney in the win over Tottenham at the end of April.

According to the disciplinary notice on May 18 of the English Football Association (FA), Klopp will be banned for one match. The remaining one match is suspended until the end of the 2023-2024 season, provided the German coach does not re-offend.

Therefore, Klopp will not be in direct command when Liverpool plays Aston Villa in the 36th round of the Premier League tomorrow, May 20. He will return in the final match of the season at Southampton on May 28. Liverpool is currently in fifth place with 55 points, one point behind Man Utd and four points behind Newcastle.

Klopp was fined for his comments directed at referee Tierney after the 4-3 win over Tottenham at Anfield on April 30. At the post-match press conference, the 55-year-old coach said that Tierney intended to card him for his goal celebration, which was unfair to Liverpool.

Following Klopp's comments, the Professional Game Officials' Office (PGMOL) said Tierney "maintained professionalism throughout the game" via the communication system and reviewed all recordings. As a result, PGMOL rejected the Liverpool manager's claim that the English referee had made "inappropriate statements".

An independent governing body found Klopp's comments constituted inappropriate conduct because they implied bias, questioned the integrity of the referee, were personal, offensive and brought the game into "disrepute".

However, the Liverpool manager avoided a heavy penalty when he expressed remorse at a subsequent press conference on May 2 and in a letter sent a day later in response to the FA's accusations.

Klopp admitted to the media that he shouldn't have gone too far, and that his actions stemmed from being carried away by emotions and anger during the match. In the letter, the former Dortmund coach also apologized for his excessive celebration in front of fourth official John Brooks and admitted to "making inappropriate comments" about Tierney.

In October 2022, Klopp was fined nearly $40,000 and banned from directing one match for his inappropriate attitude towards assistant referee Gary Beswick in Liverpool's 1-0 win over Man City in the Premier League at Anfield.

In February 2019, the German coach was fined $50,000 for accusing the referee of bias, when he said that Kevin Friend always blew in West Ham's favor in one-on-one situations during a 1-1 draw in London.
