Honoring the quintessence of craft villages - connecting trade

Vietnam currently has more than 5,400 craft villages with millions of workers diligently preserving the quintessence of traditional crafts. Craft villages are not only places to preserve national cultural values but also actively contribute to rural economic development, job creation and export promotion. However, in the context of digital transformation and increasingly fierce global competition, many craft villages are facing many difficulties in consuming products, finding markets and innovating business methods.

Hai Phong alone, after expanding its administrative boundaries, now has more than 50 traditional craft villages, with typical products such as Chu Dau pottery village, Bao Ha wood carving village, Ha Dong and Thuong Hong handicraft villages... These are important cultural and economic resources, contributing to creating a unique identity for the Port city.

However, many craft villages are facing difficulties in product output due to the narrowing of traditional consumption markets, lack of customer access channels and limited capacity to apply digital technology . Meanwhile, the demand for handicraft products is on the rise, especially in the gift, travel and souvenir segments associated with cultural experiences.

In that context, Hai Phong is focusing on implementing a program to restore and develop craft villages associated with digital transformation and e-commerce, considering this an inevitable direction to help craft villages "revive" strongly, bringing handicraft products to domestic and international markets.

In order to promote the output of craft village products, at the Culture, Tourism and Trade Promotion Week event within the framework of the Con Son - Kiep Bac Autumn Festival 2025, the traditional craft village space of the city chaired by the Hai Phong Department of Industry and Trade was vividly recreated through direct production activities and promotion on digital platforms. The event attracted many tourists, businesses and artisans to participate.

The objective of the Culture, Tourism and Trade Promotion Week is to connect culture, tourism and trade, with a special emphasis on promoting the consumption of traditional craft village products on digital platforms, contributing to promoting the image of the port city with a rich historical tradition.

At the craft village space, visitors can admire the sophisticated manufacturing process from typical craft villages of Hai Phong such as pottery, wood carving, silver carving, fine arts... The handmade products not only demonstrate skillful craftsmanship but also contain profound cultural values, reviving the quintessence of ancient crafts.

Ms. Vu Thi Kim Phuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong City, shared: “The event not only honors cultural and historical values but also serves as a bridge between businesses, artisans and consumers. This year, we especially focus on digital transformation in trade promotion, supporting craft villages to expand consumption channels and promote products more effectively."

According to Ms. Phuong, the Department of Industry and Trade coordinated with the Vietnam E-commerce Association and the TikTok Shop platform to implement a program to promote the consumption of traditional craft village products on digital platforms, helping to promote OCOP products and Hai Phong craft villages to consumers nationwide.

"Organizing a series of livestreams to introduce products and directly connect artisans with consumers via digital platforms has helped bring traditional values closer to the public in a modern way," Ms. Phuong emphasized.

Participating in the event, Chu Dau Ceramic Company - a famous ceramic brand, considered this an opportunity to both introduce the quintessence of ancient crafts and expand customer access through digital platforms.

Ms. Le Mai, company representative, said: “The organizers' support for craft villages to livestream directly at the event is very practical. Through famous KOLs and KOCs, Chu Dau pottery and many other craft villages can spread the unique values of Vietnamese culture to friends at home and abroad."

In addition, the company has promoted the application of e-commerce and cooperated with travel companies to bring Chu Dau ceramics into the chain of cultural and creative tourism experiences.

“Each of our products is a cultural story. When we tell that story on a digital platform, the value of the product is multiplied many times over,” Ms. Mai shared.

When trade promotion becomes a digital journey

The new point of the event is the participation of young content creators, typically content creator Viet Anh and editor Ngoc Bamboo. They live-streamed directly at the exhibition spaces, attracting tens of thousands of views, thereby bringing the image of Hai Phong craft village products closer to the public, especially the youth.

Viet Anh shared: “Through livestream, I try to convey cultural stories in a close and vivid way to attract young people. I also support artisans in filming videos, making TikTok, helping them tell their own product stories."

Viet Anh added: “Traditional culture is not dry at all. Each product has a valuable story. Only when I experience it directly can I truly feel its value."

Viet Anh also expressed his desire to continue the journey of discovering and promoting Vietnamese craft villages on digital platforms, aiming to spread love for national culture and support small production establishments to access the online market.

“I hope to cooperate with artisans and local people to design compact handmade products that suit young people's tastes, creating a sustainable bridge between craft villages and consumers," Viet Anh added.

Currently, Hai Phong has more than 350 typical rural industrial products, creating an important resource to promote the rural economy and handicraft exports. However, according to Ms. Vu Thi Kim Phuong, the challenge is still great, especially in finding a market for the products.

“In the coming time, the Hai Phong Department of Industry and Trade will implement programs to guide brand building, improve designs, develop distribution channels and livestream sales skills, helping craft villages become more confident when stepping onto e-commerce platforms,” said Ms. Phuong.

Assessing the significance of the program, Mr. Vo Van Khanh, Head of the Vietnam E-commerce Association in the Central and Central Highlands, emphasized: "The program to promote the consumption of craft village products and OCOP Hai Phong through TikTok Shop is a creative way to connect culture, tourism and trade. This is an opportunity to help businesses and craft villages expand their markets, apply e-commerce, and contribute to promoting a sustainable local economy."

The Con Son – Kiep Bac Culture, Tourism and Trade Promotion Week 2025 is not only a place to display products, but also a forum for connecting and sharing knowledge between businesses, artisans and content creators. Trade promotion is now not only limited to traditional booths, but has become a digital journey – where traditional culture is retold in a creative, modern language and spreads strongly in the technology age.
