Combining multiple models for increased efficiency
We arrived at the 2nd Mechanized Reconnaissance Company on an afternoon in early October. Although it was the unit's break time, the officers and soldiers were still actively taking care of the vegetable garden, fish pond, livestock and poultry, taking the production activities as a joy after a day of training. Captain Luong Ngoc Minh - Deputy Technical Company Commander took us to visit the unit's garden - pond - barn model. The first impression was the rows of green vegetables in straight rows; next were the trellises of squash and gourds providing shade, interspersed with rows of papayas laden with fruit. The barn area was arranged neatly and cleanly. The fish pond had clear blue water, the four banks were closed by trellises of climbing plants...

In the garden of more than 400m², the unit grows a variety of vegetables and spices such as: green mustard, sweet mustard, lettuce, water spinach, jute, amaranth, squash, gourd, squash, lemongrass, chili, cinnamon... Thanks to the application of reasonable intercropping and crop rotation measures, combined with the use of kitchen ash, duckweed, manure from livestock and green plant by-products composted into organic fertilizer, the vegetable garden is always lush, giving stable productivity. Captain Luong Ngoc Minh shared: "The unit focuses on growing clean, organic vegetables, both ensuring the health of soldiers and contributing to maintaining a clean barracks environment."
Right next to the vegetable garden is a barn area of over 200 square meters, currently with over 50 black pigs, hybrid wild boars; dozens of goats, sheep and a flock of over 200 chickens and ducks. It is noteworthy that the unit not only raises pigs for meat but also proactively raises sows to ensure a stable and long-term source of breeds. Many healthy piglets are also supported for other units in the area. Soldier Dang Dinh Dat shared: "To keep livestock healthy and develop stably, we always focus on cleaning barns, strictly preventing diseases, and periodically disinfecting; at the same time, using clean food sources that the unit utilizes and processes on-site."
The 400m² fish pond area is also effectively exploited with many types of fish such as tilapia, red tilapia, catfish. In the dry season, when the water source of ponds, lakes, and ditches is almost exhausted, the unit has flexibly used well water and tap water to maintain the fish as well as irrigate the vegetable garden. Thanks to that, the source of increased food is maintained continuously, less affected by the harsh weather.
Contribute to improving soldiers' lives
Thanks to scientific organization and proactive and hard-working spirit, the production results of the 2nd Mechanized Reconnaissance Company have met and exceeded the target for many consecutive years. Every year, the unit is self-sufficient in over 95% of its green vegetable needs and 75% of its fresh food needs; the average profit from production is about 1.3 million VND/person/year, adding 1,600 VND/person/day to the soldiers' meals. Soldier Mau Van Huyen confided: "Daily meals with vegetables grown by ourselves and fish raised by ourselves are much more delicious! Thanks to proactively sourcing clean food on the spot, we are not only assured about food safety, but the production activities themselves also contribute to training us to be persistent, hard-working and more attached to the barracks."
Captain Tran Ngoc Ha - Company Commander, Mechanized Reconnaissance Company 2 affirmed: "Increasing production not only improves life but also trains diligence and responsibility for soldiers, creates a green - clean - beautiful barracks landscape, contributing to building a strong and comprehensive unit, "exemplary and typical". Over the years, the unit has always effectively carried out production increase work associated with the emulation movement "The Army Logistics Sector follows Uncle Ho's teachings", thereby improving the quality of logistics assurance, meeting the training and combat readiness requirements of the unit".
With the spirit of solidarity and creativity, the officers and soldiers of the 2nd Mechanized Reconnaissance Company have effectively maintained the garden - pond - barn model in accordance with reality. In the coming time, the unit will continue to expand the vegetable growing area, develop more fruit trees, increase fish and poultry farming, and focus on applying new technical advances. These efforts are not only to improve the efficiency of production but also to join the movement of building bright - green - clean - beautiful barracks, contributing to ensuring a good life for soldiers.
