Kidney damage due to arbitrary use of functional foods

Many people buy all kinds of functional foods to drink in the hope of being healthy, however, doctors say that using them on their own can actually make things worse.

Get into trouble because of wrong nutrition

Dr. Bui Chi Thuong, Gia Dinh People's Hospital ( Ho Chi Minh City), said he recently met a female patient who had been postmenopausal for 2 years and was worried about her declining beauty, so she arbitrarily used estrogen supplements to maintain her beauty.

After a while, the patient had abnormal bleeding, thinking it was the return of menstruation. When examined, the ultrasound results showed that her uterine lining was 24 mm thick (while in postmenopausal women, the normal thickness is only under 4 mm), with cysts inside the lining, increasing the risk of serious pathology. The MRI results confirmed the abnormally thick uterine lining.

The doctor advised the patient to undergo hysteroscopy to remove the endometrium and make a diagnosis. During the endoscopy, the thick endometrium made the removal take a long time because the uterine cavity was enlarged by the hyperplastic endometrium.

After surgery, both the doctor and the patient anxiously awaited the pathology results. Fortunately, the results showed a mild mucosal hyperplasia, not cancerous and without serious abnormalities.

In postmenopausal women with a uterus, estrogen supplementation without progesterone can cause endometrial hyperplasia, leading to the risk of abnormal endometrial thickening or cancer. Therefore, doctors advise women to be cautious.

According to Dr. Tran Chi Cuong - Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Neurointerventional Association, there are also many cases of disaster due to self-medication with functional foods.

A businesswoman in Ho Chi Minh City had been treated for some minor illnesses but used too many drugs and functional foods. As a result, she suffered from kidney failure, with a glomerular filtration rate of only 31 (normal >60), facing the risk of needing kidney dialysis in the future.

Using dietary supplements without prescription can be harmful to your health.

After consulting with Dr. Cuong, this woman stopped taking unnecessary supplements and only used one prescribed medication. The results were many changes, after just over a month, her glomerular filtration rate increased to 39, showing a significant improvement in kidney function.

A 70-year-old woman took more than 10 dietary supplements every day. She felt her health was getting worse and her kidneys were failing. After being advised and persuaded by Dr. Cuong to give up this habit, she stopped using unnecessary dietary supplements. A few months later, she felt healthier and could walk better.

A 49-year-old woman in good general health with no risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Two years ago, the patient underwent an MRI scan of the brain. The results showed normal blood vessels. However, after using many dietary supplements without permission, she developed symptoms of neck pain, headache and dizziness.

The patient went to the hospital for a check-up, and the second MRI scan showed an abnormally narrowed blood vessel in her brain. After examination, the doctor discovered that she had purchased and used many types of functional foods of unknown origin. Although a definitive conclusion could not be made, the time of the symptoms coincided with the period of using these products, causing the doctor to question the connection.

4 things to remember

According to Dr. Tran Chi Cuong, when using functional foods, you need to be very careful, not all types are safe. Many products of unknown origin, unverified or even fake goods can contain harmful chemicals.

Dietary supplements can support health if used properly, but abuse or use of products of unknown origin can lead to serious consequences such as kidney failure, cerebral thrombosis, or long-term health damage.

Therefore, Dr. Cuong recommends:

Use only when necessary: You should use functional foods as prescribed by your doctor or after carefully researching their origin, ingredients and uses.

Don't trust word of mouth: Avoid using a product just because you heard it advertised, word of mouth, or was recommended by an acquaintance without verifying it.

Eat healthy, live a healthy lifestyle : Instead of abusing functional foods, maintain a balanced diet, avoid alcohol, tobacco and unhealthy habits such as constant partying.

Regular health check-ups: Early detection of health problems helps with effective treatment and avoids unnecessary abuse of drugs or supplements.
