Houthi launched dozens of UAVs to attack cargo ships and warships in the Red Sea

In a televised speech on Saturday, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said the force had carried out one of the largest attacks on US vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Specifically, Houthi launched 37 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to attack US Navy warships and the commercial ship Propel Fortune. The group claimed the attack was successful, but did not provide evidence.

Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the US military and coalition forces shot down at least 28 drones in the Red Sea early on Saturday. "No US or coalition naval vessels were damaged in the attack and there were no reports of damage to commercial vessels," CENTCOM said.

The Singapore-flagged merchant ship Propel Fortune has issued a statement saying it has no links to Israel, but the Houthis claim it has links to the US.

Separately, the French military said a French warship and fighter jets also shot down four UAVs that were approaching naval vessels belonging to the European Aspides mission in the area.

"This defensive action directly contributed to the protection of the Barbados-flagged cargo ship True Confidence, which was attacked on March 6, as well as other commercial vessels passing through the area," the French military said in a statement.

In addition, the British Ministry of Defense announced that the country's warship HMS Richmond, along with international allies, repelled a Houthi UAV attack overnight and said there were no injuries or damage.

UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said: "Last night, HMS Richmond used Sea Ceptor missiles to shoot down two attack drones, successfully repelling another unlawful attack by Houthi forces."

Earlier on Saturday, CENTCOM said the military was responding to a large-scale attack on vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden between 4 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. local time.

Since last November, Houthi forces have attacked ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, claiming it was a campaign to show solidarity with Palestinians in the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
