The International Labour Organization (ILO) has rejected a petition by trainee doctors in South Korea to intervene, as the government said it would suspend the licenses of striking doctors who do not return to work within the deadline set by the government.
The ILO has determined that the Korea Intern Training Association (KIRA) is not eligible to file such an intervention complaint, as it is not a union or representative labor group, the Chunso daily newspaper quoted the Korean Labor Ministry as saying.
KIRA had earlier requested urgent intervention from the ILO on March 13, accusing the government of forcing them into forced labor by issuing orders to return to work and abusing its power by suspending their licenses. During a meeting on March 22, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said the government would supplement medical personnel by hiring retired senior doctors and deploying military doctors.
