Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on October 8 praised the new agreement reached with Hamas on the first phase of a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, and decided to convene a cabinet meeting later in the day to approve the agreement, Xinhua News Agency reported on October 8.

"A great day for Israel," Prime Minister Netanyahu said, adding that the deal included the release of all (Israeli) hostages still held by Hamas. Of the 48 hostages remaining in Gaza, Israel believes about 20 are still alive.
"With the approval of the first phase of the peace agreement, all Israeli hostages will be returned home. This is a diplomatic success and a victory for the State of Israel," Netanyahu said.
According to the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, the country's cabinet is expected to meet later on October 8 to vote on the deal. Several key members of Prime Minister Netanyahu's far-right coalition, including Ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, have repeatedly spoken out against any deal with Hamas and have publicly called for the reconstruction of Jewish settlements in Gaza.
Prime Minister Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone in a conversation that Mr Netanyahu's office described as "very warm and emotional", in which the two leaders "congratulated each other on the historic achievement of signing an agreement securing the release of all hostages".
President Trump earlier announced on social media that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the "first phase" of Mr Trump's 20-point plan to end the conflict in Gaza and release Israeli hostages and some Palestinian prisoners.
