According to the National Service for Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp), the newly discovered poisonous frog species in Alto Purus National Park, Peru has been named Ranitomeya hwata. At just 15 mm long, Ranitomeya hwata is the smallest frog species in the genus Ranitomeya.

The Ranitomeya hwata frog has bright and vibrant coloration, including bright yellow dorsal stripes, a black band separating the throat region from the belly, and a variegated pattern on the belly.
Scientists say the frogs, Ranitomeya hwata, live in bamboo forests of the genus Guadua. They use the hollow cavities of the bamboo, which collect rainwater, as breeding grounds. Males typically mate with multiple females at each breeding site.
