At the end of a kilometer-long mine-strewn tunnel in the Gaza Strip, Israeli soldiers discovered cells that once held about 20 hostages.
Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, an Israeli military spokesman, said on January 20 that they found an area with five cramped iron-barred cells, a toilet, a mattress and drawings belonging to a child hostage who was freed in November 2023.
Israel released images of a labyrinthine one-kilometer-long underground tunnel, saying it had taken journalists along to record data before destroying it.

The entrance to the tunnel was located in the home of a Hamas member in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, where Israel has been concentrating its forces in recent weeks. “The soldiers entered the tunnel where they encountered Hamas members, engaged in a fight and ended up killing them,” Mr Hagari said.
The tunnel was packed with explosives. "According to the testimony collected, there were about 20 hostages held here at different times under harsh living conditions, no sunlight, low oxygen and suffocating humidity," he continued.
Some of the hostages held there were released during a week-long ceasefire in November 2023. Others are among more than 130 hostages still in Gaza after being kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 in an attack on southern Israel. Tel Aviv says 112 are still alive.
