Italian police have placed four people under house arrest as part of an investigation into alleged illegal access to state databases.
According to a VNA reporter in Rome, speaking to the press on October 26, Italy's national anti-mafia prosecutor, Giovanni Melillo, said the investigation "sounded the alarm" by shedding light on a "huge market for classified information" that had taken on "business-like dimensions."
Specifically, Milan prosecutors accuse a private corporate intelligence company of exploiting three main databases: one that collects alerts about suspicious financial activities; one used by the national tax agency with citizens' bank transactions, utility bills, and income statements; and a police investigation database to sell to customers or to blackmail businessmen and politicians , starting at least in 2019 and continuing until March 2024.
Among the four arrested was Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, grandson of the late billionaire founder of Luxottica Group. Leonardo Del Vecchio, owner of the Ray Ban brand, allegedly tasked the company with gathering information because the heirs of his father, who died in 2022, were in a disagreement over inheritance rights.
The investigation follows another recent probe into a massive data breach at Italy's largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo.
