Overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, continuing to improve the quality of teaching and learning

On the afternoon of October 18, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son visited and presented gifts to the education sector in Thai Nguyen - a locality heavily affected by storm No. 11, where two officials and teachers died, many families of officials, teachers, staff and students were flooded, and property was severely damaged.

Provide enough missing textbooks for students

According to the Director of the Thai Nguyen Department of Education and Training, Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, storm No. 11 and the floods after the storm have caused serious damage to the province's education sector. The whole province has 180 educational establishments affected; 2 officials and teachers unfortunately died while on duty; more than 11,600 sets of textbooks, more than 55,000 notebooks and more than 5,000 sets of school supplies were damaged. Many families of officials, teachers, staff and students were flooded, causing heavy property damage. The total value of the converted damage is estimated at nearly 182 billion VND.

Immediately after the flood receded, the Department of Education and Training mobilized the entire sector to organize cleaning, disinfection, repair facilities, and mobilize parents and support forces. To date, 100% of students in the area have returned to school as usual.

Up to now, there have been about 250 delegations to support the education sector with 400 tons of relief goods, the total value in cash and in kind is estimated at about 40 billion VND. In particular, books and teaching equipment have received over 8,000 sets of textbooks, more than 20,000 notebooks (worth about 3 billion VND) and teaching equipment worth more than 3.5 billion VND.

Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son acknowledged and highly appreciated the spirit of overcoming difficulties of the Thai Nguyen education sector. The Minister directed the Ministry's functional units to coordinate with publishers to provide the 3,600 missing textbooks early next week.

At the same time, the Minister emphasized the need for thorough disinfection, ensuring hygiene, electrical safety, and school health , especially in dormitories and kitchens; urgently reviewing and making a list of repairs and replacements of damaged equipment to propose budget support, while taking advantage of socialized resources and recommending the Central Government for support according to regulations on natural disaster prevention and control.

The Minister noted that in the coming time, Thai Nguyen province and the education sector need to prepare documents and investment portfolios to take advantage of capital from the National Target Program on Modernization and Improvement of Education and Training Quality for the period 2026-2035, in which priority is given to investment in educational facilities in riverside, stream and low-lying areas. Along with that is the need to strengthen digital management, learning materials, and periodic data backup to minimize risks in increasingly extreme natural disaster conditions.

The Minister requested local authorities to continue to pay attention and support essential equipment, and at the same time direct the review and development of plans to prevent and combat natural disasters and ensure school safety during the rainy and stormy season.

Promote digitalization of records and documents to avoid damage caused by floods

On the same day, Minister Nguyen Kim Son visited Thai Nguyen University of Education. This is the most severely damaged unit in Thai Nguyen University, with total damage estimated at about 82 billion VND, caused by storm No. 11.

Minister Nguyen Kim Son praised the proactive and responsible spirit of the school's leaders and staff, and emphasized the need to ensure absolute safety of electricity, water, and infrastructure in areas that were deeply flooded; mobilize students to participate in cleaning up the environment with safety instructions, considering it a civic education activity, contributing to raising community awareness.

The Minister noted that Thai Nguyen University needs to promote the digitization of records and documents, and proactively back up data periodically. In addition, it is necessary to review and rearrange the laboratory system, prioritizing key and shared laboratories.

At the same time, the school needs to prepare an investment portfolio to take advantage of target programs, cooperation projects and socialized resources to improve the quality of facilities, associated with innovation in teacher training and development of STEM and STEAM applied fields of study.

During his working trip to Thai Nguyen, Minister Nguyen Kim Son also expressed his gratitude for the attention and strong direction of the leaders of Thai Nguyen province; the cooperation of agencies, organizations, businesses and the social community to help the Thai Nguyen education sector overcome the consequences of storms and floods.

The Minister affirmed that the Ministry of Education and Training will continue to accompany localities in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, modernizing facilities, ensuring safe teaching and learning conditions, and at the same time fully preparing conditions to improve the quality of education and training in the coming period.
