Train passengers are allowed to bring up to 20 kg of free luggage.

Since February, the railway industry has applied new regulations on the weight and size of free carry-on luggage for train passengers.

According to the leader of Hanoi Railway Transport Joint Stock Company, Circular 09/2018 on passenger and luggage transport on railways does not currently specify the weight and size of free carry-on luggage and checked baggage.

Therefore, the new regulations of the railway industry clearly state that the free carry-on baggage of each passenger must not exceed 20 kg; the dimensions must not exceed 0.8 m in length, 0.5 m in width, 0.4 m in height and 0.16 m3 in volume.

Passengers must pay extra fees if their carry-on baggage exceeds the specified weight and size. If the baggage obstructs movement or poses a safety hazard to the carriage, the passenger must deposit it in the baggage car if space is available.

For checked baggage, each item must not exceed 2.5 m in length, 0.5 m in width, 0.5 m3 in volume and 75 kg in weight. The sender must clearly state personal information, type of goods, quantity and provide documents and invoices when requested by the authorities.

For bulky goods, one cubic meter is charged as 300 kg. Each bicycle is charged at 50 kg; electric bicycles of all types, motorbikes with cylinder capacity less than 50 cm3 are charged at 100 kg; electric motorbikes and motorbikes from 50 cm3 to under 125 cm3 are charged at 150 kg.

Motorcycles of all types with cylinder capacity from 125 cm3 to under 250 cm3 are charged 250 kg; motorcycles of all types with capacity from 250 cm3 to under 500 cm3 are charged 450 kg.

Currently, the price of checked baggage when traveling by train is from 1,500 to 5,000 VND per kg, depending on the weight of the shipment from a few kg to hundreds of kg.

After completing the procedures to send checked baggage, passengers can change, not send all or part of the checked baggage; change the destination station, recipient but must complete the procedure to change, adjust 4 hours before the train departs at the stations that accept checked baggage.
