Showing off your new hometown on VNeID: Be careful of "losing money and getting sick"

Mr. Le Ngoc Anh (26 years old), an employee of a travel agency in Hanoi, said: "After my residence and hometown information was updated on the VNeID application, I was very happy and shared my new address on social networks to show off to my friends."

According to Ngoc Anh, he was not aware that sharing this information on social networks could lead to data leaks, allowing scammers to take advantage of it to commit illegal acts.

Notably, observations by reporters on social networks show that many users, when sharing images from VNeID, do not cover sensitive information such as personal identification numbers, full names or years of birth.

According to cybersecurity experts, personal information on VNeID is very sensitive, revealing this information will create conditions for scammers to collect data; from there, create scam scenarios suitable for each user.

Therefore, users should absolutely not share photos of their new hometown on the VNeID application to ensure personal safety and that of their family members.

Taking advantage of updating information on VNeID to commit fraud

According to the National Population Data Center, taking advantage of the arrangement of provincial and commune-level administrative units and the termination of district-level administrative units, many bad actors have called, texted via phone or social networking platforms... impersonating police officers or officials of People's Committees at all levels, then sent links asking people to access them to update their personal information.

From there, the subjects hack into or take over the use of mobile devices to steal data, personal information or money in bank accounts and e-wallets of the victims.

The updating of information according to new administrative boundaries will be automatically performed by the Ministry of Public Security, ensuring the rights and accurate information of the people.

Never provide personal information, bank account, OTP code (transaction authentication code) to anyone via phone, text message or social network without clearly verifying your identity.

Do not access strange links of unknown origin to provide personal information, bank account information...

When detecting signs of suspected fraud, you should immediately contact the bank to protect your account, and report to the nearest police station or through the VNeID application for timely guidance and handling.
