Construction of Metro line connecting West Lake and Hanoi's Old Quarter begins

Mr. Nguyen Cao Minh, Head of the Hanoi Metro Project Management Board (PMU), said that the project to build Urban Railway Line No. 2, Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao section, is an important national project, using ODA loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) combined with counterpart funds from the Hanoi City budget, and is a symbol of the friendship and close cooperation between Vietnam and Japan.

This Metro line is nearly 11 km long, including 1.94 km above ground and 9 km underground, with 10 stations: C1 - Xuan Dinh, C2 - Ngoai Giao Doan, C3 - Tay Ho Tay, C4 - Buoi, C5 - Quan Ngua, C6 - Bach Thao, C7 - Ho Tay, C8 - Hang Dau, C9 - Hoan Kiem and C10 - Tran Hung Dao.

Xuan Dinh Depot has an area of 11.3 hectares, is a maintenance, repair, and operational training center and is planned to develop according to the traffic-oriented urban model (TOD), linking traffic infrastructure with smart and sustainable urban development.

“Not only contributing to reducing traffic congestion, improving the environment, and enhancing the quality of life, urban railway line No. 2 also has symbolic significance, connecting the past of thousands of years of civilization with the modern urban future, creating a new face for the civilized, dynamic and sustainable capital,” informed Mr. Nguyen Cao Minh.

According to Mr. Nguyen Cao Minh, in order to meet the needs of green and sustainable urban development, the unit is determined to implement the project on schedule and with quality, determined to turn urban railway line No. 2 into a new symbol of Hanoi Capital.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan said that this is not only a key project of the capital but also a symbol of the vision and aspiration for innovation towards an urban development model associated with public transport. At the same time, it connects the historical and cultural values of Thang Long - Hanoi with the dynamic pace of life of the new era.

Accordingly, the TOD model will be developed at Xuan Dinh depot (this is the first TOD model in Vietnam, combining the functions of a passenger transport transit point, services, commerce and mixed housing). At underground station C9 connecting with the Square - park east of Hoan Kiem lake, creating a TOD area to ensure the connection of underground traffic with public space, preserving heritage, creating unique architectural highlights contributing to honoring the cultural center, thousand-year history of the Capital.

“The capital city of Hanoi will develop 15 urban railway lines with a length of 619 km, forming a large-scale, modern and synchronous public transport network, ensuring fast, sustainable and environmentally friendly movement. The groundbreaking of the project today is an important beginning, marking a period of synchronous development of the capital's urban railway system. Thereby, demonstrating the vision and determination of the Party Committee, government and people of Hanoi,” Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan emphasized.

Also at the groundbreaking ceremony, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan requested that the city's departments, branches, and local authorities need to be proactive, active, and closely coordinate with the investor in the process of implementing the investment project. Contractors participating in the project need to focus maximum resources, human resources, and equipment to organize urgent, scientific , and safe construction; strictly implement in accordance with legal regulations, ensuring quality, technique, aesthetics, and progress of the investment project.
