Brain tumor as big as a tangerine was discovered after a traffic accident.

A few days ago, Ms. PHT (48 years old, Long An) had a traffic accident on her way to work. Although she only had minor scratches on her skin, she went to the hospital to have her head examined for peace of mind.

At the hospital, Ms. T. was ordered by the doctor to have a CT scan and MRI of the brain, which discovered a large brain tumor located in the left temple, measuring 50 mm, but fortunately this was a benign tumor.

Taking a medical history, Ms. T. said that before that, she often had headaches that came and went, thinking that the pain was due to the after-effects of a traffic accident 18 years ago, so when she had pain, she just endured it or took painkillers.

On June 20, Master - Specialist Doctor 2 Huynh Van Vu, Deputy Head of the Department of Cranio-Spine 2, Xuyen A General Hospital, said that the discovery of the brain tumor was accidental, not related to the trauma caused by a traffic accident, but thanks to that, the patient was diagnosed and treated early. Although it is a benign meningioma, not causing any symptoms for the patient, the large tumor needs to be surgically removed as soon as possible. Because over time, the tumor grows larger, the surgery will become difficult. Moreover, the large tumor is located in the left hemisphere, which is the dominant hemisphere that controls language and listening ability, so when the tumor is large, it will cause compression affecting the ability to speak, understand, weakness in the limbs, and even coma.

"In patient T., although the tumor was large, it was located in a shallow position, so it was quite safe for surgery. We performed surgery to remove the tumor with the help of a microscope, with the advantage of a magnified surgical field and the ability to observe every millimeter, so the surgeon could completely remove the tumor while still minimizing damage to the surrounding brain structure," said Dr. Vu.

Two days after surgery, the patient can walk, eat and live normally, with good spirits.

Early signs of brain tumors

Brain tumors are abnormal growths of cells in the brain that form a mass. These tumors can be benign or malignant, and can occur anywhere in the skull – from the membranes that surround the brain, the base of the brain, the brainstem, to the sinuses, nasal cavity and other areas.

Early symptoms of brain tumors are often inconsistent between patients, because they depend a lot on the location of the tumor. For example, if the tumor forms in the cerebellum, the area responsible for controlling movement, the patient may have difficulty walking, lose balance or be clumsy in daily movements. Conversely, if the tumor grows in the visual area, the patient may experience eye problems such as blurred vision, double vision or even sudden vision loss. In addition, the speed at which the tumor grows and its size also contribute to determining the level of expression and progression of symptoms.

According to Dr. Vu, the symptoms of meningioma often develop silently and sometimes are just transient headaches, so we often ignore the disease. Therefore, regular in-depth health screening is quite important, even when there are no symptoms. With modern technology today, it helps to provide detailed images of problems inside the brain and cerebral blood vessels, thereby helping doctors diagnose the disease accurately and have timely treatment directions.
