On September 18, a representative of the Traffic Police Department (C08, Ministry of Public Security ) said that in order to reduce traffic accidents on highways, starting from 7:30 a.m. on September 18, the Traffic Police force will organize propaganda and guide traffic regulation on highways with two lanes running in the same direction, on the North-South highway.
The Traffic Police Department uses specialized vehicles to regulate traffic on 7 highways. Passenger cars with more than 29 seats and trucks over 7.5 tons are not allowed to enter lane 1 on 2-lane highways.
On the routes Noi Bai - Lao Cai, Hai Phong - Mong Cai, Bac Giang - Lang Son, Cau Gie - Cao Bo, Da Nang - Quang Ngai, Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay, Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong; Traffic police regulate passenger cars with 29 seats or more and trucks weighing 7.5 tons or more to enter the right lane in the direction of travel (the lane with lower speed). The remaining lane, close to the median strip, will be reserved for cars, trucks under 7.5 tons and passenger cars under 29 seats.
According to the explanation of the Traffic Police Department, this is to prevent vehicles from driving slowly, sticking to the left lane, causing traffic congestion, reducing road efficiency, and preventing and reducing traffic accidents on highways.
In the first days of implementation, traffic police will guide drivers at toll stations and use mobile patrol cars to broadcast propaganda on loudspeakers on the road.
According to Major General Do Thanh Binh - Director of the Traffic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security), this unit will propose to organize roads with 2 lanes exclusively for cars moving in the same direction.
For 3-lane routes, trucks will travel in the right lane, passenger cars with 29 seats or more will travel in the middle lane and the right lane next to the emergency stop strip. For passenger cars with less than 29 seats, cars will pass and travel in the left lane (lane next to the median strip).
“For two-lane roads, all trucks and passenger cars with more than 29 seats must travel in the right lane, while cars and other vehicles must travel in the lane close to the median strip,” said the Director of the Traffic Police Department.
"We will propose to amend the law in the direction that roads with 2 or more lanes will have 1 lane for overtaking other vehicles. As for inner-city roads, we will coordinate with local authorities to optimize and narrow the car lane from 3.4-3.5m so that cars are forced to go in rows, avoiding having 2 lanes but 3 cars lined up side by side," Major General Do Thanh Binh emphasized.
