Without new import tax, will Apple still increase the price of the iPhone 17 series?

(Dan Tri) - Apple is said to increase the price of the upcoming iPhone 17 series, even though the company is not currently subject to new import taxes from the Trump administration.

In early August, Apple CEO Tim Cook made a move to "please" President Donald Trump with a special souvenir made from Corning tempered glass, a 24K gold base, and a commitment to invest 500 billion USD in the US over the next 4 years.

This action was highly appreciated by President Trump and analysts said it was a wise move to help Apple avoid new import taxes that the US government plans to impose on products imported from China, including iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.

Although the US has not officially imposed new import taxes, leaked information shows that Apple may still increase the price of the upcoming iPhone 17 series, with an increase of 50 to 100 USD depending on the version. Many market analysts also agree with this assessment.

“There has been a lot of discussion around whether the iPhone will go up in price,” said Jeff Fieldhack, research director at market analysis firm CounterPoint.

Previously, many consumer goods such as clothing, shoes, and coffee imported into the US had to increase prices to cope with the new tax rate. Technology products such as smartphones and laptops have not yet had a similar move. However, Apple may be the company that "starts" the wave of smartphone price increases, dragging other technology companies along.

Apple has kept the price of the iPhone Pro unchanged since 2017. However, in 2020, it increased the price of the entry-level iPhone from $699 to $829. In 2022, Apple will eliminate the $699 iPhone Mini, replacing it with the larger-screened iPhone Plus for $899. The iPhone Pro Max will also increase in price from $1,099 to $1,199 in 2023.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Apple will continue to increase the selling price of the upcoming iPhone 17 series. However, the question is, what reason will Apple give to explain this price increase, when the company has not yet had to pay the new import tax?

The price increase of iPhone is likely to not only happen in the US market but also affect the global market, because the selling price of iPhone in the international market often depends on the selling price in the US.

The iPhone 17 series will be officially launched by Apple on September 9 (early morning of September 10, Vietnam time). Only then will we know whether Apple will actually increase the selling price of its new iPhone series or not.
