On the evening of October 9 at Go Dau Stadium, the Vietnamese team defeated 10-man Nepal thanks to goals from Tien Linh, Xuan Manh and Van Vi. However, this victory did not help coach Kim Sang-sik and his team narrow the gap with Malaysia, as in the previous match, the yellow-black team also beat Laos 3-0.
This result helps Malaysia get closer to the ticket to the 2027 Asian Cup finals, when the tournament organizers only take the top team of 6 groups in the qualifying round.
Malaysia is currently 3 points ahead of Vietnam, meaning that as long as they don't lose in the remaining 3 matches, this team will have a ticket to continue.
Meanwhile, Vietnam must win their remaining matches if they want to have any hope of surpassing their opponents. In case the two teams are tied on points, the head-to-head difference will be taken into account first. This means that coach Kim Sang-sik and his team must beat Malaysia by more than 4 goals in the rematch on March 31, 2026, if they want to advance.

As for Malaysia, the team still faces the prospect of being deducted points, losing the match or even being eliminated from the tournament by the AFC, if they do not provide convincing evidence in the recent naturalization scandal of 7 players. This is the scenario that will help the Vietnamese team get a ticket to the final round of the Asian Cup 2027.
In the match on October 14, Vietnam will face Nepal again at Thong Nhat Stadium (considered Nepal's home stadium), while Malaysia will host Laos at Bukit Jalil Stadium.
