Another military plane crash kills three US Marines in Australia

Five others "were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital in serious condition," the Marine Rotational Force - Darwin said in a press release.

They said the victims were among 23 Marines aboard the MV-22B Osprey propeller plane during routine training exercises and the cause of the crash was under investigation.

Northern Territory Police Commissioner Michael Murphy said the crash happened on the remote Tiwi Islands just after 9am local time on Sunday. Prime Minister Albanese said no Australians were involved in the crash during the exercise, called Predators Run 2023.

Sky News reported that about 2,500 military personnel from Australia, the US, the Philippines, Indonesia and Timor-Leste took part in the exercise. The US and Australia have increased military cooperation in recent years due to growing instability in the region.

There have been a number of crashes involving military aircraft or military personnel in recent days. On Friday, three Ukrainian pilots were killed in a training plane crash.

A day earlier, a US Marine Corps pilot was killed in a crash involving a supersonic F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet. In addition, 10 people were killed when the plane of Wagner mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin crashed in Russia.

Meanwhile, also in Australia, five of its soldiers were killed last month during a major bilateral exercise when their helicopter crashed into the sea off Queensland.
