Two men in their 40s seriously injured while playing pickleball while saving the ball

(Dan Tri) - Before being seriously injured while playing pickleball, the victims had played tennis and badminton for a long time and had almost no serious problems.

On September 9, speaking with Dan Tri reporter, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Orthopedic Trauma specialist, working at a clinic in Ho Chi Minh City, said that he recently received and treated two cases of serious injuries while playing sports .

The patients were all in their 40s. The first case was a man who had played tennis and badminton for many years and had suffered almost no serious injuries.

Recently, the patient switched to playing pickleball. During a long match, the man tried to run to save the ball when he heard a "pop" in his heel and dislocated his knee.

At the medical facility, an MRI scan showed that the patient had a severe anterior cruciate ligament tear, requiring emergency surgery and expected to take a long time to recover.

The second case involved a man who had just finished playing tennis and then switched to pickleball. The patient also heard strange sounds and experienced pain when stomping to save the ball.

Imaging results showed that the patient had a completely torn Achilles tendon and needed tendon surgery.

"The common characteristic of patients is that they play sports too much because of fun and desire for the ball, and may not play with the right technique because there is no coach to support them.

No matter what sport, players need to learn the right techniques and warm up thoroughly. In particular, do not think that pickleball is a gentle sport and try to save the ball.

Many patients have come to see me because of tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), shoulder, knee, back pain...", Dr. Xuan Anh warned.

Before the above case, there were many patients who had serious accidents while playing pickleball. In April, a 30-year-old actress was hospitalized with a broken leg in the middle of a pickleball court in Ho Chi Minh City.

Through examination and imaging at the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic Trauma Hospital, doctors recorded that the patient had a fracture of the middle third of the left femur, requiring emergency surgery. The surgery was considered quite difficult, because the patient was 1.78m tall, with a fracture line running down the left femur.

After a process of consideration and preparation, the doctors successfully performed surgery on the patient using a small incision technique with pins at both ends of the femur.
