World Sight Day 2025 takes place on October 9, 2025 with the message “Love your eyes”, calling on the community to pay more attention to vision care and protection, towards the goal of “The right to sight for everyone by 2030”. This is a deeply humane event, launched by the World Health Organization and the International Organization for the Prevention of Blindness, to raise awareness of the whole society about preventing blindness and protecting the eyes.
Globally, about 80% of blindness or vision loss is preventable with timely care — but access to eye services remains a challenge in many rural, remote areas.
In Vietnam, many community programs in previous years have organized free eye examinations in schools, trained grassroots health workers to detect refractive errors or eye diseases early, to reduce the burden on the health system and support people to access eye services. However, there are still gaps in service quality, facilities, equipment and ophthalmology specialists between localities.
With an aging population, the risk of age-related eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration is increasing — if not diagnosed and treated promptly, can lead to irreversible vision loss.
In Ca Mau , eye examination and treatment activities, especially for students and the elderly, are regularly implemented and have achieved many positive results. Doctor Ngo Thanh Tan - Deputy Director of the Ca Mau Province Eye and Dermatology Hospital said that the Eye Care organization (Netherlands) has sponsored many programs to examine, screen and treat eye diseases in the locality, bringing many practical benefits to the community.
The Hospital is currently organizing the School Eye Care Festival at 04 secondary schools in 03 communes : U Minh, Dong Hai and Phong Thanh Tay B. The activities include: free eye examination for students and parents ; giving free glasses to children with refractive errors or eye diseases. In addition, the program also incorporates propaganda activities and educational games to provide knowledge about refractive errors in schools, common eye diseases, helping students raise awareness of eye protection and early detection of vision problems for timely treatment.
This activity not only has practical significance in school health care, but also contributes to raising community awareness about preventing and protecting eyesight for the young generation.
In the coming time, Ca Mau Province Eye and Dermatology Hospital will continue to carry out many other meaningful activities such as eye screening for garment workers and employees at seafood processing factories, contributing to protecting people's vision health.
World Sight Day 2025 is not just a day to remind, but a day to motivate all levels of society to commit to action. With the power of health communication, we can turn awareness into practice, helping millions of people to escape the darkness and see clearly every smile, every page, every future.
