A video recorded in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, has exposed the harshness of the natural world when a hyena attacked a week-old baby antelope.

This heartbreaking image shows a mother antelope's desperate attempt to rescue her baby.

In the video , the mother antelope continuously used its horns to fiercely attack the hyena. However, the stubborn predator did not easily give up its prey. The hyena then carried the baby antelope's body elsewhere to avoid the mother antelope's pursuit.

However, the motherly instinct urged the mother antelope to continue chasing and deliver a fatal blow to the hyena, but that was still not enough to make the hunter give up.

Eventually, the hyena's persistence paid off when the mother antelope was forced to give up. The hyena dragged the carcass of the calf to safety to eat.

The video clearly shows the harshness of nature, where survival is always associated with unequal struggles between predators and prey.

The antelope in this situation is the hook-horned oryx, also known as the Topi. This antelope is known for its fast running ability, large appearance and sharp horns for self-defense.

The topaz typically weighs between 60 and 160 kg, with males being larger and heavier than females. The horns of this antelope range from 40 to 60 cm in length, and both males and females have horns for self-defense.

Topis are one of the fastest animals on the African savannah. When in danger, they can reach speeds of up to 80km/h. As a result, predators often ambush and attack topis, rather than using their speed to chase them.

Because of the large size of the oryx and its long horns for self-defense, predators such as hyenas and leopards often target young antelopes for attack, rather than adult antelopes.

The topis calf lives with its mother for about 6 to 8 months after birth before starting its independent life. During this time, the calf depends on its mother's milk and is closely protected by her.

After about 6 to 8 months, when the young antelope can eat grass, they will gradually separate from their mother and begin their independent life as a member of the herd.
