Today (July 16), more than 1 million candidates nationwide learned their 2025 high school graduation exam scores with many emotions. Along with the joy, there was also sadness when many candidates with a total university entrance exam score of over 20 points still failed to graduate due to failing scores.
According to the 2025 High School Graduation Exam Regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training , a failing score is defined as 1 point or less in any exam subject.
To be recognized as a high school graduate, candidates must simultaneously meet two conditions: not failing any exam subject and having a graduation score of 5.0 or higher.
This means that even if a candidate achieves a very high total university entrance score, if just one subject has a score of 1 point or lower, the door to graduation will be closed.
According to Dan Tri reporter's statistics, among more than 1.12 million candidates taking the 4-subject high school graduation exam in the 2018 program, there are 37 cases with a total admission score of over 20 but are likely to receive a failing score.

Many candidates with high scores for university admission but fail, may not meet the requirements for high school graduation (Synthesized by: Huyen Nguyen).
One example is the case of candidate number 290281xx ( Nghe An ) with a total admission score for block C03 (math, literature, history) of 25.5 points, or an average of 8.5 points/subject.
Another case is a candidate from Ha Giang , whose total admission score for block C00 (literature, history, geography) is 24.5 points but his math score is only 0.4 points.
The next two candidates from Ho Chi Minh City and Nghe An both had admission scores of 23.75 but failed.
To quickly summarize, there are up to 37 cases of candidates taking the 2018 general education program with high scores but are likely to fail graduation. Most of the candidates have low scores in math.
The two possibilities for candidates not to fail the graduation exam in the above case are that candidates who graduated from high school in previous years retake the exam and candidates are exempted from one exam but during the data entry process, the score is still displayed as 0.
Preliminary statistics of the 2025 high school graduation exam show that up to 936 candidates failed, a sharp increase compared to last year. Of which, the math subject recorded a record high number of failed scores with 777 candidates, a 10-fold increase compared to the number of 76 in 2024.
This situation, although not new, once again sounds the alarm about the importance of comprehensive and serious learning in each subject.
In 2024, many candidates fell into the unfortunate situation of having very high university entrance exam scores but still failing to graduate, including two candidates in Hai Phong with admission scores of up to 27.25 and 26.45 but received 1 point in physics.
