The number of vehicles temporarily detained at warehouses of evidence in Ho Chi Minh City is increasing.

Due to increased penalties for drivers violating alcohol concentration, many people abandon their vehicles, causing temporary storage facilities in the city to become overloaded, according to the HCM City Police Department of Staff.

The information was given by Lieutenant Colonel Le Manh Ha, Deputy Head of the HCM City Police Department's Staff Department, at the HCM City socio -economic press conference on the afternoon of January 11. In 2023, the city's traffic police handled more than 650,000 violations, of which alcohol concentration violations accounted for nearly 20%. The number of motorbikes and cars seized was nearly 155,000.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Ha, because the fine for alcohol concentration violations is relatively high, sometimes higher than the value of the violating vehicle, many people have abandoned their vehicles, increasing the number of vehicles impounded in warehouses and yards.

Although the authorities have tried to arrange, the storage area has not met the requirements, and many traffic police units have even had to use empty spaces at their headquarters to store vehicles in violation. "The Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police Department alone is still short of 10,000 square meters of warehouse space to store vehicles used for evidence and violations, not counting the police of districts and towns," said Lieutenant Colonel Ha.

The overloaded warehouses for vehicles used for evidence and violations in Ho Chi Minh City have been going on for many years. In March 2023, the Legal Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council established a team to monitor the handling of vehicles used for evidence and violations by the police of districts and the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police Department. Most warehouses are overloaded, tens of thousands of motorbikes and cars have to be parked in empty lots exposed to the sun and rain, while handling them is entangled in many regulations and takes time.

The warehouses are also substandard and lack monitoring and fire-fighting equipment, posing a risk of fire and explosion. The city's Traffic Police Department once proposed building four warehouses for seized vehicles to reduce the load, but so far this has not been implemented.

To ensure fire safety during the dry season, the City Police will soon deploy many solutions such as providing fire prevention equipment, regularly checking and maintaining vehicles, developing fire fighting plans, cleaning warehouses, etc.
