Italian mafia-style organizations have expanded significantly abroad, penetrating more than 45 countries worldwide. Within the EU, these organizations have a wide range of activities, mainly in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Malta, Romania and Spain. These Italian criminal networks also have a presence outside the EU, notably in Colombia, Switzerland and the United States .

Europe’s most dangerous criminal networks operate in a highly flexible manner, using legitimate business structures to facilitate or conceal their criminal activities.
