Son La: A 68-year-old man was told to drink leaves and roots of a forest tree. A few days later, he felt tired, had severe liver and kidney failure, and had arterial blockages, and had to have both legs amputated.
On May 28, Dr. Do Hien, Head of the Cardiology Department, Son La Provincial General Hospital, said that the patient was admitted to the hospital with swelling, bruising, bleeding, and stiffness in both legs after 7 days of taking drugs of unknown origin at home.
Test results revealed limb arterial occlusion, liver and kidney failure with hypertension, and were given intravenous fluids and medication. "The patient had acute liver and kidney failure, acute limb ischemia due to thrombosis, and a high risk of death," the doctor said.
Due to the poor prognosis, the patient was transferred to Bach Mai Hospital ( Hanoi ) to continue dialysis treatment. The results of the CT scan showed that the patient had arterial blockages in both legs, which were no longer able to recover and had to be amputated.
After surgery, the patient asked to be transferred back to the provincial hospital for continued post-operative monitoring.
The arbitrary use of traditional medicine has been warned, but many people still take it, leading to serious consequences, even death. In fact, some studies show that traditional medicine can help patients recover their health and strengthen their immunity. However, patients need to consult and prescribe doctors, not arbitrarily use and take drugs of unknown origin. When there are unusual health symptoms, patients need to go to a medical facility immediately for proper examination and treatment.
