The Konstantinovka front began to heat up again, as the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) began a direct attack on the city and began to advance into the urban area from the east. According to available information, the RFAF assault units captured the first buildings in the Santurinovka area. The bulk of the attack took place last week, when the assault units of the RFAF Southern Group of Forces advanced from Predtechino and entered the administrative boundary of the city of Konstantinivka. The day before, it was reported that the attack took place about 1.5 km from the Yagodka farm to Santurinovka, after which the Russians captured a housing complex on the outskirts of the area.
DIVGEN channel reported that Russian troops have occupied the first buildings in the Santurinovka subdistrict on the eastern outskirts of the city of Konstantinovka; now Ukrainian troops are trying to organize counterattacks to push Russian troops from the newly captured positions. According to Readovka, the RFAF is confidently moving to the next stage of the offensive on Konstantinovka. Russian military analyst Boris Rozhin confirmed that the RFAF Southern Group assault groups have entered the administrative boundaries of the city and established a strong position in the Santurinivka area. Currently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) are trying to hold out using FPV UAVs as well as taking advantage of muddy roads and difficult terrain to prevent the RFAF from advancing. But after the Ukrainian army south of the Kleban-Byk reservoir fell, the defense line is collapsing, which means that the Russian army has begun to attack one of the largest cities in the Donetsk region. Expert Rozhin told Redadovka that the RFAF offensive is being carried out slowly from the east, using the Chasov Yar, Stupochki and Predtechino bridgeheads. According to him, the RFAF is also putting pressure on the Pleshcheyevka area, located in the southeast.
“The main goal here is to break through the enemy’s fortified area in the Ivanopol region, as this area borders the Kleban-Byk reservoir, which is very difficult to overcome in the current conditions,” Rozhin noted. However, even here, the AFU is retreating, especially after Russia captured the south of Kleban-Byk and eliminated a group of Ukrainian troops trapped south of the lake, Rozhin added. Northwest of Lake Kleban-Byk, the capture of the village of Stepanivka was expected, which would bring Russian units to the western flank of Konstantinivka. The city would then be attacked from three directions at once. According to the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian troops broke into the northern bank of the Kleban-Byk reservoir from the Oleksandro-Kalinovo direction. "Recently, the RFAF has conducted large-scale mechanized attacks in rainy and foggy weather conditions, which hampered the operations of Ukrainian UAVs," ISW experts explained. According to Mr. Rozhin, the “key” to capturing Konstantinovka is the same as other major cities that have been controlled before: cutting off logistics. To achieve this goal, the RFAF will cut off the road connecting the city with Druzhkovka, which is located next to it in the north. The AFU itself has also recorded an increase in Russian drone attacks, targeting communications and logistics systems in this area, Mr. Rozhin emphasized. "Of course, if the fighting situation in the Dobropolye area (north of Pokrovsk) develops in Russia's favor in the near future and Shakhovo is captured, then as the offensive continues, the RFAF General Staff will have options to advance both west and north," Rozhin believes.
However, the rugged terrain at Konstantinovka poses a challenge to the offensive, with late autumn rains turning the ground into mud, further complicating the RFAF and AFU. Moreover, experts warn, the Ukrainian military currently has a large concentration of UAV control teams there. However, even these conditions do not make Konstantinovka's defenses impregnable, expert Boris Rozhin said. He concluded that the fact that the RFAF began fighting in the inner city shows that even such a defense system can be overcome. It should be noted that in September there were reports of Russian troops advancing to the outskirts of Kostyantynivka and allegedly concentrating assault units on the eastern outskirts, but these reports were premature. RFAF commando and reconnaissance groups were active there, and on October 14 an attack was reported.
As military expert Andrei Marochko emphasized, Kostyantynivka itself is a very “difficult” city, and an attack on it would be like taking Bakhmut. Some other experts believe that the AFU will hold Kostyantynivka to the end, since it is an outpost that protects Kramatorsk-Sloviansk from the south. (photo source Topwar, Ukrinform, Rvvoenkory).
