Fresh flowers are quite popular on October 20 in Ho Chi Minh City.
Fresh flowers increase in price
Ho Thi Ky flower wholesale market (Vuon Lai ward, Ho Chi Minh City) has become the busiest destination these days. The bustling atmosphere of buying and selling, the laughter of traders mixed with the fragrance of hundreds of fresh flowers continuously imported from Da Lat, the West and the North.
Prices of fresh flowers increased compared to normal days.
Traditional flowers such as velvet roses, baby roses, sunflowers, peonies, and hydrangeas are dominating the market. Flower prices have increased by 20-30% compared to normal days, depending on the type and size. Peonies are sold for about 90,000 VND/bunch of 5 large flowers, roses range from 100,000-130,000 VND/bunch, sunflowers 60,000-80,000 VND/bunch, while baby roses and hydrangeas cost from 170,000-300,000 VND/bunch.
Flower shop owners are working non-stop because the number of orders is higher than usual.
Mr. Huynh Van Tan, owner of Sac Hoa Viet flower shop, said: "Roses are still the main product, but this year, wholesale and retail customers really like peonies and hydrangeas because of their unique designs and easy coordination. Flower prices have increased slightly due to erratic weather and high transportation costs, but purchasing power has increased significantly. It is expected that the night of October 19 to the morning of October 20 will be the peak time."
Not only Ho Thi Ky wholesale market, flower shops on Nguyen Thien Thuat, Hai Ba Trung, Phan Xich Long streets... are also bustling with customers. Ms. Tran Tu Anh, a trader at Ho Thi Ky market, said: "In the past 3 days, the number of customers has increased significantly. Many people choose small bouquets, combining many types of flowers with lovely designs. Although the price is higher than usual, the demand is still high because everyone wants to have a delicate gift for their woman."
Flower shops recorded a high number of orders.
This year, since October 20 falls on a Monday, many people took advantage of shopping and giving gifts early on Sunday. Some customers shared that they wanted to choose fresh flowers in advance to avoid the crowded scene. Ms. Hong Nhung, a retail customer at the market, said: "I choose sunflowers and phang flowers because they are bright and meaningful. The price has increased but it is still acceptable, the important thing is to choose a beautiful bouquet of flowers to express feelings."
Meanwhile, online flower shops have also seen a sharp increase in pre-orders. Customers only need to choose a design online, pay online and receive the goods on the same day. This is also a convenient, fast and safe form of shopping.
Changing consumer trends
Along with the fresh flower market, gift products for October 20 are also "hot". Besides traditional gifts such as perfume, cosmetics, jewelry, this year unique, practical and highly personalized products stand out.
At Co.opmart, Aeon, Lotte supermarkets, bouquets of "vegetable flowers and fruits" such as lettuce, cauliflower, carrots, bell peppers are wrapped with fresh flowers, creating a gift that is both beautiful and meaningful. Each bouquet of flowers like this costs only 50,000 VND but strongly attracts male customers. "My wife likes to cook so I chose a bouquet of lettuce flowers to give her. It is both beautiful and can be used to make delicious dishes. A simple gift that my wife will remember for a long time," said Mr. Thanh Hoa, a resident of Cau Kieu ward.
Vegetable bouquets have become a new trend in the market on October 20 this year.
Not only vegetables, Aeon Mall also launched the “beef rose” collection. These are slices of beef skillfully rolled into a fresh rose, wrapped in a luxurious gift box, delighting many customers.
Inside major shopping malls such as Saigon Centre, Vincom, Van Hanh Mall... a series of fashion and cosmetic brands are simultaneously discounted from 20 - 40%. Gift combos such as handbags, makeup mirrors, mini perfumes, and dining vouchers are designed eye-catchingly, meeting the taste of "buy fast - get beautiful gifts - reasonable prices". A representative of a shopping mall said: "The number of visitors doubled on weekends. In addition to shopping, many people come to take photos, have fun, and enjoy food, turning October 20 into a meaningful reunion occasion."
In addition to direct gifts, the online gift market is also growing strongly. Ms. Mai Huong, owner of the shop "The Gift Box", shared: "Customers no longer just buy flowers but look for a complete combination. Combos of scented candles, herbal teas, custom-designed notebooks or natural skin care sets are very popular. In particular, young customers prefer 'green', environmentally friendly gift packages, online payment and on-time delivery to the recipient."
According to traders and retailers, although the price of flowers and gifts has increased slightly, purchasing power this year is still very high. Partly because people in Ho Chi Minh City tend to spend early, ordering online to avoid overload on the holiday. The other part is because the gift trend is increasingly shifting towards convenience, practicality and experiential value. If in the past, gifts on October 20 were mainly fresh flowers or cosmetics, now customers are more interested in products that show delicate care, such as health care gift sets, "self-care" combos or family dinner and movie experiences.
Many practical gifts are flowers and vegetables in supermarket systems to give to relatives.
According to a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, in recent years, the “emotional commerce” model – where consumers buy gifts not only to give but also to share emotions – has become a new driving force for the retail market. Despite many economic difficulties, occasions such as March 8 or October 20 still see strong increases in revenue, demonstrating the need to express gratitude and spread love in the community.
