Boeing plane engine fire in mid-air

US Atlas Air's Boeing 747-8 cargo plane suffered an engine fire, creating a fire trail in the air, forcing it to make an emergency landing at Miami airport.

A Boeing 747-8 cargo plane of the American carrier Atlas Air had an engine problem on the night of January 18, after taking off from Miami International Airport to Puerto Rico.

The pilot contacted air traffic control, reporting an engine fire shortly after takeoff, heading away from the airport and requesting permission to turn around. Video posted by Fox News showed flames appearing to shoot from the left engine of the plane, creating a trail across the night sky.

The plane then landed safely at Miami airport. The five crew members were not injured.

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expanding its investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it had discovered a hole above the engine after a preliminary inspection, but did not disclose details.

According to the FAA, Atlas Air has operated this Boeing 747-8 for 8 years. Boeing is also assisting the airline in finding the cause of the incident.

The fire follows two high-profile aircraft incidents this year. On January 2, a Japan Airlines Airbus collided with a coast guard plane on the runway at Haneda Airport in Japan, killing five people. Three days later, a Boeing 737 MAX 9 taking off from Portland Airport in the US was forced to turn around after a door panel came undone mid-flight.
