Boeing aircraft 'selling like hotcakes' thanks to President Trump's air diplomacy

US aircraft manufacturer Boeing is expanding its share of the global aviation market thanks to President Donald Trump's "air diplomacy".

Aircraft orders usually take place at shows held in Paris, Dubai or Singapore, but this week Washington and New York became the venues for major aircraft deals.

In recent days, the US capitals of Washington and New York have witnessed a "flow" of global leaders flocking to attend the 80th United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week (September 22-30). This is an opportunity for world leaders to discuss and find solutions to political , environmental and social crises, but at the same time, it is also an opportunity for the US to demonstrate economic diplomacy, which has become a hallmark of President Donald Trump's second term.

Large orders

Boeing deals have been a regular feature of President Trump’s meetings with foreign leaders. In recent months, he has been on a roll with major deals, from British Airways buying American-made jets to Qatar placing the largest widebody order in Boeing history.

As of August, the US planemaker had secured 725 orders for 2025, compared with 600 for Airbus, putting Boeing on track to surpass its European rival’s annual sales for the first time since 2021.

Through the aircraft orders, the leaders gathering in New York and visiting Washington this week have both had a chance to build a good personal relationship with Mr. Trump, an airplane enthusiast, and to upgrade their countries' aircraft fleets.

Among them, according to Bloomberg , Turkey is expected to order up to 250 commercial aircraft from Boeing. This deal, which has been prepared for a long time, was delayed to be signed in front of President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on this occasion.

Mr. Trump himself also said he would welcome Mr. Erdogan to Washington on September 25 and that trade and defense agreements would include “large-scale purchases of Boeing aircraft,” along with fighter jets produced by Lockheed Martin.

Earlier, on September 22, Uzbekistan Airways, with the participation of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, announced an order to purchase up to 22 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which is the largest order ever in the history of this Uzbek airline.

Immediately after the announcement, Mr. Trump praised the purchase in a post on Truth Social, calling it "a great deal with Boeing."

Meanwhile, Morocco's Royal Air Maroc has been evaluating proposals from Airbus and Boeing for dozens of jets. The airline's fleet relies heavily on the US manufacturer for its large aircraft, giving Boeing a good chance of sealing a major deal with the Moroccan airline.

President Trump also revealed that Indonesia will buy 50 Boeing planes, a condition of a trade deal in July. National airline Garuda Indonesia is considering a potential order for 50 Boeing 737 Max planes, and the deal could be announced this week, according to unnamed sources.

Gain an advantage in the aviation industry

Mr. Trump has emphasized the trade deficit as the main reason the United States seeks to reshape the global flow of goods through tariffs. However, the United States still has a large trade surplus in the aviation sector, given the important role of Boeing, General Electric and other key manufacturers.

For its part, European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has announced it will redouble its sales efforts to catch up with Boeing's sales.

In addition to the deals with the UK and Qatar, Mr. Trump also "scored" in the deal with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) to buy Boeing 737 Max aircraft.

In addition, Etihad Airways of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) also confirmed an order for 28 wide-body 787 and 777X aircraft, worth $14.5 billion, during President Trump's state visit in May.

However, some deals are still tentative, while others are continuations of previous agreements, or re-implementations of previous commitments. Because of the complexity of large-scale orders, negotiations often take place long before Mr. Trump returns to the White House, although Mr. Trump still has a great deal of influence in completing the deal, thanks to the power of the US President.

In fact, large backlogs and sluggish production at both Boeing and Airbus mean that new orders will only bring limited resources in the short term. For the popular Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 models, orders placed today will not be delivered until early next decade.

Waiting times for wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 787 are also quite long, meaning any deliveries would only take place after this Trump term.

The only major aircraft order that remains on hold is from China, where Boeing is seeking to fill a gap in orders that has lingered since Mr. Trump’s last visit in 2017. Chinese airlines are looking to buy as many as 500 Boeing planes, Bloomberg reported in August, although trade tensions between the two superpowers have stymied any deal.

Last week, Mr. Trump had a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping to schedule a meeting at the upcoming Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in South Korea. This will be their first face-to-face meeting since the 2019 G20 Summit in Japan. The meeting is expected to give Mr. Trump another opportunity to continue "closing the deal" for Boeing.

On September 23, US Ambassador to China David Perdue said the US and China are just weeks away from completing negotiations on a "huge order" from Boeing. "This is a large order and very important to the President," Ambassador David Perdue emphasized.

With consecutive large orders and President Donald Trump's strategy of taking advantage of "air diplomacy", US aircraft manufacturer Boeing certainly will not miss the opportunity to expand its market and gain an advantage over its "rival" Airbus.
