A spokesman for ANA (All Nippon Airways) said on January 17 that the passenger - believed to be a 55-year-old American man - bit a crew member on the arm while "heavily drunk", causing her minor injuries, according to AFP.

The incident forced the pilots of the plane carrying 159 passengers to return to Tokyo's Haneda Airport, the Japanese airline said. The male passenger was later handed over to police.

According to Japan's TBS, the passenger told investigators that he "had no memory at all" of his actions.

On social media, some people likened the story to the opening of a zombie horror movie. Others pointed to the fact that aviation incidents involving Japan have been happening continuously since the beginning of the year, with four other incidents also gaining attention in just over two weeks.

The most serious was the collision between a Japan Airlines (JAL) passenger plane and a smaller Japanese Coast Guard plane on January 2. All 379 people on board the JAL Airbus were evacuated just before the plane was engulfed in flames.

But five of the six people on board a coast guard vessel taking part in relief operations after a major earthquake in central Japan were killed.

On January 16, a Korean Air plane crashed into a parked Cathay Pacific plane while taxiing to the runway at New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, northern Japan.

Korean Air said the accident occurred after "a third-party ground handling vehicle skidded due to heavy snow", but there were no casualties.

ANA said a similar incident occurred on January 14 when one of its planes "came into contact" with a Delta Air Lines plane at an airport in Chicago (USA), and caused no injuries.

In addition, an ANA Boeing 737-800 aircraft was said to have had to turn back on January 13 after a crack was discovered in the cockpit window.
