Tet flower season

Spring is a wonderful gift that nature bestows upon humans. Spring is also the season when flowers bloom, spread their fragrance, and show off their colors. Flowers are the colors and scents of spring, contributing to making the spring picture more radiant and vibrant.

Every time Tet comes, spring returns, everywhere in the countryside, you can see brilliant colors of flowers, especially the yellow color of traditional Tet flowers such as apricot, chrysanthemum, marigold, making people's hearts more excited. According to folk beliefs, yellow is the color symbolizing luck, the color representing spring; therefore, apricot, chrysanthemum, marigold are very popular. As scheduled, every year, especially the last months of the year, especially the twelfth lunar month, flower growers in the district are busy planting and taking care of these flowers to bring the flavor of Tet to every home.

In early December this year, flower growers in Ham Thuan Bac district have all prepared flowers for the 2024 Lunar New Year with the best quality and design. Mr. Tran Van Hieu, residing in Hoi Nhon village, Ham Chinh commune, is an example: He has been growing flowers for 4 years, although it is not long, but growing flowers for Tet has helped his family's life become more stable; it is estimated that after deducting expenses, he still makes a profit of about 80 million VND for each Tet flower crop; this year, he planted 2,200 trees to sell during the Giap Thin New Year, although the number of trees died young, he estimated that he would earn a profit of 60 - 70 million VND if the price is stable compared to the 2023 Lunar New Year. As one of the areas specializing in growing Tet flowers, these days, Na Boi quarter, quarter 1 and Tam Hung quarter, Ma Lam town are covered with the green color of flowers. Every house of the flower growers here is full of pots of flowers with many kinds of flowers such as marigolds, cockscombs, marigolds arranged in front yards, backyards, and fields. Every year, at the beginning of December, when the flower market begins to bustle, they also enter the stage of pruning, shaping, and harvesting the largest amount of flowers of the year. This year, many households have boldly increased the quantity and expanded the area of flower planting with the hope of increasing income during the Tet holiday.

“The entire town currently has about 5 hectares of cultivated land where farmers specialize in growing flowers for Tet. This year, people mainly grow 3 types of flowers: marigolds, primroses and cockscombs; of which primroses account for more than 50% of the area. Compared to last year, this year, farmers' flower care is quite favorable. Apart from primroses, which died prematurely at a rate of about 30%, the remaining flowers are growing well, ensuring to meet market demand. It is expected that by the 20th of the 12th lunar month, people will sell them to traders and people in the area,” said Mr. Pham Van Nhon - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Ma Lam town.

Compared to other localities in the province, Ham Thuan Bac district has not yet formed large-scale flower growing areas, but most of the production is small-scale on a household scale, spread across communes and towns. However, due to the high profits from flower growing, in recent years, in addition to households specializing in growing Tet flowers with an area of 500 - 1,000m2, many households have also boldly invested in growing flowers for sale on this occasion; small households have about 200m2, large households have 400 - 500m2 with traditional flowers such as chrysanthemums, primroses, cockscombs, marigolds... Thanks to learning from the experiences of their predecessors, they not only come to the profession but also profit from growing flowers for Tet. According to them, coming to the profession is a fate because if you love flowers, you will have the motivation to take care of and stick with the flower growing profession. With so much hard work, flower growers always hope that the flowers will not disappoint so that the farmers who work hard from dawn to dusk can enjoy a prosperous and fulfilling Tet.
