Russia-Türkiye continue 'constructive cooperation'

During the phone call on June 9, the heads of Russian and Turkish diplomacy also discussed the current international and regional agenda.

On June 9, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a phone call with his newly appointed Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan.

“The two sides reaffirmed the continued constructive cooperation between the two foreign ministries. The foreign ministers exchanged views on key issues of cooperation, including the activities of the intergovernmental commission on economic and trade cooperation, focusing on large-scale energy projects. They also discussed the timetable for future contacts. The top diplomats also touched on the current international and regional agenda,” the statement said.

Previously, on June 8, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Mr. Fidan also had a phone call with his US counterpart Antony Blinken.

The statement confirmed: “Today, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had a phone call with his US counterpart Antony Blinken. Issues regarding Sweden’s NATO membership, the normalization of Türkiye-Armenia and Azerbaijan-Armenia relations, the purchase and modernization of F-16s, as well as the Ukrainian grain deal were discussed.”

The two sides also agreed to meet soon to discuss the bilateral agenda.

Previously, on June 3, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed Mr. Hakan Fidan, a close confidant and head of the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) since 2010, as Foreign Minister, replacing Mr. Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Mr. Hakan Fidan, 55 years old, is known for his contribution to Türkiye's national security and involvement in various diplomatic and intelligence activities. He also served as an advisor to Mr. Erdogan when the leader was Prime Minister.
