Reuters on May 12 quoted a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry saying that its forces had just gained control of four more villages in the Kharkiv province in northeastern Ukraine, in the context of Ukrainian generals acknowledging the difficult situation there.

The Russian side declared control of the additional villages of Hatyshche, Krasne, Morokhovets and Oliinykove.

Kharkiv province borders Russia's Belgorod province to the north. On May 10, Russia launched a new offensive from its territory, threatening to open a new front.

On May 11, Russia declared control of five villages in Kharkiv, including Borysivka, Ogirtseve, Pletenivka, Pylna and Strilecha, but Ukraine said it had repelled attacks and fought to control these areas.

Ukraine did not immediately comment on the latest information from the Russian Defense Ministry. The Kyiv Independent news site on May 12 quoted Governor Oleh Syniehubov of Kharkiv province as saying that Russia had attacked 27 areas in the province in the previous 24 hours, killing three people and injuring five.

Dozens of homes were destroyed or damaged in the morning airstrikes, Ukraine's National Emergency Service said.

Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi said on May 12 that Ukrainian forces are facing a difficult situation in combat in Kharkiv and are doing everything possible to hold the front line.

"Defense Forces units are fiercely defending, attempts to break through the Russian defenses have been thwarted. The situation is difficult, but the Ukrainian Defense Forces are doing everything possible to maintain defense lines and strongholds, causing damage to the enemy," Syrskyi wrote on Telegram, according to Reuters.
