Long Giang hamlet, Dam Thuy commune has more than 100 households, agricultural production is the main source of income for the people. Even when it was still foggy, people rushed to the fields to harvest rice. While working hard with sickles to cut the glutinous rice grains and to prop up the fallen rice clumps, Mr. Nong Van Tuan said: After the flood after storm No. 10, many fields were destroyed and flooded, so the family had to try to harvest quickly, because if left for a long time, the rice would all sprout. Through the commune's propaganda, watching weather forecasts on phones and TV, we know the level of danger and impact of the upcoming storm No. 11, so everyone took the opportunity to help each other harvest rice, helping each other to the best of their ability.
In the fields, despite the hot midday sun, from the fields of rice heavy with golden harvesters in operation, or the small fields that had to be harvested by hand, people harvested rice while supporting each other to transport the rice home. This summer-autumn crop, Mrs. Hoang Thi Phi's family planted quite a lot, and so far they have harvested all the sticky rice, with only 2 fields of unhusked rice left. She confided: The experience of the elders from the past said "green house is better than old field", my family harvested a part of the rice early before the recent flood, fortunately after the flood, although some fields were broken, as soon as the sun was up, the family harvested immediately and dried them and preserved them to avoid mold.
Not only Dam Thuy, but also the eastern communes of the province are busy harvesting the remaining summer-autumn rice before the storms come. Mr. Hoang Van Hong, in Na Sa hamlet, Dinh Phong commune, shared: During the recent African swine fever outbreak, his family lost 2 sows and 2 litters of piglets with a total weight of over 500 kg. These days, relatives and neighbors have helped each other harvest the rice, so far about 2/3 has been harvested. If we wait a few more days to harvest, the storms will surely destroy everything, the crop may be lost to the flood, and the damage will continue to pile up.
In response to the weather warning, local authorities have mobilized forces to support people in urgently harvesting rice and crops. With the spirit of "The border is home, the border is the homeland, the ethnic people are blood brothers", border guards and soldiers urgently went to the fields to help farmers in border hamlets harvest rice "running from the rain" before the impact of storm No. 11 .
After Storm No. 10 passed, Cao Bang suffered heavy losses in terms of human lives and property, over 5,700 houses were damaged (damaged, roofs blown off, foundations collapsed, isolated...); over 6,528 hectares of rice and crops were flooded, broken, and buried, including over 3,022 hectares of summer-autumn rice.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, storm No. 11 - Matmo will cause a very heavy rain over a large area in the Northern region. The path of storm No. 11 directly affects Cao Bang, forecast to cause very heavy rainfall in the province, commonly from 150 - 250 mm, locally over 400 mm. High risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep hillsides, taluy of traffic routes; land subsidence in areas with poor soil structure in the province. Floods, inundation, landslides affect people's lives and socio-economic activities, including agricultural production. People proactively deploy measures to prevent and combat storms and floods, harvest crops in areas at risk of flooding to reduce losses after the storm.
