Mr. Luyen Quang Kien, 31 years old, in Hanoi , is the first known person in Vietnam to achieve 9.0 IELTS in all four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
IDP - one of two IELTS test organizers in Vietnam - confirmed the information on the afternoon of June 6, saying that for the first time, this unit had a candidate achieve 9.0 in all skills of this test.
Mr. Kien achieved 9.0 IELTS in the computer-based test on June 3. This is the 6th time he took the IELTS test in 2023.
"My wife and I hugged and cried because we had achieved our goal over many years," said Mr. Kien.
Before Mr. Kien, among the 10 people known in Vietnam to have achieved 9.0 IELTS overall (average score of 4 skills, rounded to 0.25 points), no one achieved 9.0 in all skills.

Mr. Kien started taking IELTS in 2014 and achieved 7.5. Teaching English, then IELTS preparation, from 2018 until now, he has regularly taken the test 5-7 times a year to check whether his teaching method is effective or not.
In 2022, Kien took the IELTS test 8 times, twice achieving a 9.0 overall. However, he never achieved a 9.0 in the Writing test for any individual skill. In 2023, Kien achieved a 9.0 in Writing in the test two weeks ago, but had two skills of 8.5. It was not until the test on June 3 that he achieved the perfect score as desired, also the 5th time achieving a 9.0 overall.
Mr. Kien said that he went to the exam that day with a relaxed mentality, most satisfied with the Speaking test. Having taken the IELTS test many times, he knew the scoring criteria so well that he could predict his score right after finishing the test.
"That day I spoke fluently and used good vocabulary. Seeing the examiner's reaction, I felt reassured," said Mr. Kien, who plans to write a book sharing the secret to achieving a 9.0 IELTS.
IELTS is an international English certificate, recognized by more than 11,000 organizations in 140 countries. The IELTS test includes 4 skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing.
