Nguyen Thuy Linh accompanies Olympic champion in tournament with strange format

Vietnam's No. 1 female tennis player Nguyen Thuy Linh will participate in the BDMNTN-XL (abbreviated: BXL) team badminton tournament, with a format that has never been applied in the world.

Currently, Thuy Linh is in Indonesia to participate in this tournament. This is a team tournament, with the participation of 32 world- class players. The participating players are divided into 4 teams. Each team includes 4 male players and 4 female players.

This year's teams are named Blitzers, Hurricanes, Lightning and Rockets. Thuy Linh is on Team Lightning with Viktor Axelsen, who has won the Olympic men's singles for two consecutive times. The team also includes Fajar Alfian, Nur Izzudin Rumsani, Yuta Watanabe, Shevon Lai, Tse Ying Svet and Rutaparna Panda.

In terms of competition format, the opposing teams will have to play two singles matches and two 3-on-3 matches, each lasting 8 minutes. Time pressure will be key, forcing the players to come up with suitable playing plans and tactics for each match.

This is something new, because in traditional badminton tournaments, players are not limited by time.

The BXL Badminton Tournament will take place from October 2 to 5 in Jakarta. The total prize money is up to 750,000 USD (nearly 20 billion VND). Of which, the champion team will receive 350,000 USD (about 9.2 billion VND). This amount will be divided equally among the team members.

That means if she wins with Lightning, Thuy Linh can "pocket" more than 43,000 USD (more than 1.1 billion VND). This is a dream number, more than some Super 500 level tournaments of the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
