Writer Do Kim Cuong passed away

Many writers and poets expressed their condolences to writer Do Kim Cuong, a gentle man, a 'sincere and passionate literary official', a soldier with a pen whose 'writings were full of humanity and depth'.

News from the Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association Nguyen Quang Thieu said that writer Do Kim Cuong passed away this morning, October 23, in Hanoi .

Do Kim Cuong: A kind person in life, fierce in literature

On his personal page, Mr. Thieu expressed his respect for the writer and soldier Do Kim Cuong. According to Mr. Thieu, if one does not read what Do Kim Cuong writes, one would think that he is a person who always lives in peace and does not want to touch anyone or anything on the 74-year path of his life.

But in his writings, he is a soldier. He puts all his fierceness into his writings.

"He wrote to fight against human oblivion and indifference, against human lies and evils that are increasingly being openly proclaimed without any shame in life," Mr. Thieu shared.

The Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association listed the "unforgettable" works of writer Do Kim Cuong: The Woman Walking in the Rain (1987), Half a Crescent Moon, Half a Company (1988), The Two Remaining (1989), The Valley of Death (1990), The Wilderness (1991), The Dreamy Sky (1993), Love Story at the Sea, The Dark Backyard (1993), Confessions of a Forest Ranger (1996), Border (1996), White Sand (1997), Night of the Drought (1999), The Deformed Man (2000), The Leader of the To River Region (2001).

Poet and screenwriter Nguyen Thi Hong Ngát remembers Do Kim Cuong as a gentle and kind person. Many colleagues have the same impression of the soldier writer Do Kim Cuong.

Devoted to culture and arts

Writer Tran Dung - temporary head of the Vietnam Writers Association in Vinh Long province - still remembers the great contributions of Do Kim Cuong in the role of a "literary official".

Mr. Dung wrote: "Together with poet Huu Thinh and writer Tung Dien, he (Do Kim Cuong - PV) devoted himself to the improvement of local cultural and artistic associations and movements."

Writer Do Kim Cuong (born in 1951), from Thai Binh (now Hung Yen), a writer who grew up in a revolutionary literary environment, has a persistent writing ability.

He enlisted in 1968 and fought in the Spring 1968 and Spring 1972 campaigns and the Ho Chi Minh campaign in 1975.

In 1976, he changed majors, studied at Hue University of Education, then became a lecturer at the literature department of Nha Trang Pedagogical College.

He has held many important positions in cultural and artistic work: former Party Secretary, Vice President of Khanh Hoa Literature and Arts Association - Editor-in-Chief of Nha Trang Magazine, former Head of the Department of Culture and Arts, Central Ideology and Culture Committee (now the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee).

In his last years, the writer lived in Hanoi, participating in work at the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations and the Central Council of Literature and Arts Theory and Criticism.
