50 years is a long time to look back, look directly at the achievements and the current situation; from there, find effective solutions for Vietnamese literature. Therefore, the organization of the Vietnam Writers Association conference summarizing Vietnamese literature after 1975 in Ho Chi Minh City, and soon in Da Nang and Hanoi , has contributed to creating momentum for the next step of development in a more seamless, stable, professional and quality way.

Literature goes hand in hand with life

According to writer Nguyen Quang Thieu, Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association , after 1975 until now, the general situation of the country has opened up to writers extremely rich and diverse realities: post-war, national unification, renovation, national reconciliation, anti-corruption... Those realities are enough for writers to create great works. However, the current map of Vietnamese literature is still not very clear.

Literary critic, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dang Diep, Chairman of the Council of Literary Theory - Vietnam Writers Association, commented that over the past 50 years, Vietnamese literature has achieved many successes. The most prominent of which is that it still clings to life, to the great reality of the country and is closely linked to the tradition of the nation. Many artists have shown patriotism, closely connected with the people, thereby making breakthroughs in artistic thinking, searching for new tones, new ways of expression and gradually updating the world 's modern art.

A prominent mark of Vietnamese literature in the past 50 years is the period of the first years of renovation, the period 1986-1995, with strong developments, creating persistent and heated debates in public opinion. In this period, there were faces that stirred up the literary world such as Nguyen Huy Thiep, or the 1991 season of the Vietnam Writers Association with Bao Ninh, Duong Huong, Nguyen Khac Truong. However, later on, the Vietnamese literary world became quiet, lacking phenomena that stirred public opinion. The most recent prominent case was Nguyen Ngoc Tu with Endless Field, which was almost 20 years ago. Regarding this issue, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dang Diep said: It is true that in the recent period, our literature seems to have become quieter. However, in my opinion, literature is still moving, it's just that the climax and excitement that we saw in the early years of renovation are now moving more deeply and quietly.

Looking out into the world

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Le Hoa Tranh, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh National University, assessed that since 1975, Vietnamese literature has made many advances, changing in a diverse and rich direction. In particular, the cultural exchange and assimilation of foreign cultures have been really vibrant since the 1986 renovation period, which is a clear mark of Vietnamese literature. This is shown in the learning process, the translation of foreign literary works, theoretical schools, research theories, etc. that are widely introduced. Thanks to this learning, the creations of writers have also changed in the direction of approaching world literature. In the opposite direction, especially in the context of globalization, we need a strategy to bring Vietnamese literature to the world. More specifically, there must be a strategy to translate Vietnamese literature into strong foreign languages such as English, French, Chinese..., of which the case of Han Kang (Korea) is a vivid and inspiring example for Vietnamese literature. Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Le Hoa Tranh emphasized: Contemporary Vietnamese literature must take on the responsibility of being an ambassador to bring Vietnamese culture to the world.

In the context of the country entering a new era, the cultural industry is being focused on, an objective view of the current situation and role of literature is necessary. Poet Le Thieu Nhon, Head of the Young Writers Committee - Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, raised the issue: Many Asian countries such as Japan, China, and Korea have established funds to support literary development, in which a significant portion of the budget is allocated for research, criticism and translation of poetry. There cannot be a cultural industrial structure without proper attention to the fundamental art form of literature.

* Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dang Diep

Chairman of the Council of Literary Theory - Vietnam Writers Association:

Let us create conditions for writers to unleash their creative energy, to freely seek new ways of expression, so that they can maximize their talents. On the other hand, it also requires writers to have profound cultural strength, a truly profound understanding of the world to have works that go beyond national boundaries. In addition, we should have a strategy to promote Vietnamese literature to the world like Korea and China have done. I think these are experiences that need to be consulted to quickly bring Vietnamese literature deep into the world literary map.
