Many places in China became 'ghost towns' after Foxconn left

According to AppleInsider , a video published by China Observer on April 29 on YouTube shows footage of an abandoned Foxconn industrial park in Nanning, China. Once employing 50,000 people, it is now almost an empty shell after Apple's operations were moved to other locations, including Vietnam and India.

A Foxconn factory in China

A local man said the factory needed huge resources to support its 50,000 employees. This included 60 tonnes of rice a day, as well as 280 pigs, 1.2 million eggs and 80,000 chickens.

The relocation is also having an impact on other nearby areas. Nearby skyscrapers built to house factory workers are struggling to make ends meet, even with steep discounts. Locals have little hope that Foxconn will reopen the plant anytime soon, as signs have been removed. It is likely that only a few buildings are still being used by Foxconn, while most are vacant or rented out.

The dilapidated and abandoned facility is certainly a sign that Foxconn has made changes to its overall operations, especially after Apple moved its manufacturing away from China as a hub and into other distribution systems. Devices from the facility have reportedly been moved to similar factories in Vietnam.

For the local community, the closures show how much wealth Apple’s manufacturing can bring to the area. It also shows how quickly things can disappear and how devastating it can be without any other industry to fall back on.
