According to USNI News , the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), along with Carrier Air Wing 2 (CVW-2), cruiser USS Princeton (CG-59), destroyer USS Sterett (DDG-104) and replenishment oiler USNS Guadalupe (T-AO-200) moved through the Strait of Malacca on July 16. The group then passed through the Singapore Strait and entered the South China Sea.
AIS recorded the destroyer JS Asahi (DD-119) of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force near the USS Carl Vinson strike group in the Strait of Malacca, but it is not clear whether this ship is on the same route as the US strike group. JS Asahi is on its way back to Japan after completing an anti-piracy mission in the Middle East.
It is not yet clear how long the Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group will stay in the South China Sea and whether it plans to visit any ports. The Carl Vinson departed the San Diego Naval Base on November 18, 2024, for a deployment mission in the Indo- Pacific .
As of July 17, the task force had been operational for 241 days, including three months of operations in the Middle East region under the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
