Efforts to build Thanh Hoa province into a national energy center

Located in Nghi Son Economic Zone, Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant project, which officially began commercial operation at the end of 2018, is one of the key national energy projects.

This is the largest petrochemical refinery in Southeast Asia with a designed capacity of 10 million tons of crude oil per year, meeting nearly 40% of the country's gasoline consumption demand. In the first months of 2024, the factory has continuously operated at 15-20% above its design capacity.

Mr. Le Nguyen Quoc Vinh, Director of Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant, Thanh Hoa province said: "With the current capacity, the factory is supplying the market with about 30 thousand tons of various types of gasoline and oil every day. In 2024, the company will continue to maintain the highest continuous operation, with enough supply to support consumption."

Along with Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant, Thanh Hoa province has 45 coal trading units, a system of 343 enterprises participating in petroleum trading activities, 6 petroleum storage facilities have been invested and put into operation. In addition, there are also 33 power source projects planned with a total capacity of 5,033 MW.

Of which, the total capacity of operating power plants is 2,925 MW, the total annual electricity output of the plants reaches over 6.2 billion kWh, contributing to meeting the electricity demand for local socio-economic development.

Mr. Michael W. Savidge, Deputy General Director of NS2PC, Director of Nghi Son 2 Thermal Power Plant added: "Nghi Son 2 Thermal Power Plant will officially come into operation in 2022. The project has a total investment of nearly 2.8 billion USD, including 2 units with a capacity of 1,200 MW. We are very grateful for the attention, support and cooperation of the Thanh Hoa provincial government in accompanying us in removing difficulties during the construction, testing and commercial operation of the plant. The company will continue to maintain the efficiency of electricity production as committed to EVN, contributing to ensuring national energy security".

According to the power plan VIII approved by the Prime Minister , Thanh Hoa province will have its total power generation capacity increased to 24,667 MW.

Along with offshore wind power projects, oil and coal depots, and the stable operation of the Nghi Son oil refinery, Thanh Hoa province has enough facilities and conditions to become a major energy industrial center of the North Central region and the whole country.

Recently, the Prime Minister also approved the Plan to implement the National Energy Master Plan, the National Petroleum and Gas Reserve and Supply Infrastructure Plan for the period 2021 - 20230, with a vision to 2050. In particular, Thanh Hoa province has many projects in the list of important priority investment projects. This will be an important basis for the province to continue to call for and attract investors to develop energy projects.
