French farmers angry, attack foreign cargo trucks

French farmers attacked foreign trucks transporting imported products to the south of the country on January 25, destroying their cargo. Protesters blocked at least 10 trucks and dumped shipments of Belgian cauliflower, Polish chicken and Spanish wine on the Malataverne highway, according to French radio station Bleu.

A photo taken from the scene showed food shipments that appeared to have been burned, scattered across the highway, blocking traffic.

This is part of a recent wave of protests by French farmers demanding urgent government action to address low agricultural prices. In addition, farmers are protesting against fuel taxes, as well as the European Union's (EU) extension of free trade privileges to Ukrainian agricultural products, which they say have had a major impact on their livelihoods.

The protests have now lasted for a second week and farmers say they will not stop until their demands are met, posing the first major challenge to new French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal.

Arnaud Gaillot, head of the Young Farmers (Jeunes Agriculteurs) association, said farmers could start disrupting traffic in Paris as early as today, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, Le Parisien newspaper also reported that French intelligence had warned the government that regional agricultural federations had called on people to converge on the capital.
